This is a very special book. Each design in this book is based on my Meditative Drawing designs and techniques. There are 11 students who participated in my classes at the time this book was being designed and created submissions specifically for this book. These very special women and myself share the art and a message of allowing creativity be something special you can enjoy on any level. This book is different than The Ancient Alchemy Coloring Book in that The Artful Mandala Coloring Book has more floral and abstract designs and mandalas to color. The Ancient Alchemy Coloring Book contains images that are symbolic from around the world. May you find many peaceful moments in these designs.

About the Author
Cher Kaufmann is an inspirational author, artist, and teacher. Her extensive studies of photography and art, combined with her training in massage therapy and Reiki have helped her discover unique patterns in the world. She teaches meditative drawing to packed classes. She lives with her family outside Dallas, Texas.

Beautiful Coloring Book filled with Mandala and Mandala inspired Hand-drawn Designs

The smaller format book is filled with designs that will provide me with many hours of coloring fun and relaxation. While many coloring books are created from computer generated artwork (and I enjoy those, too), this book has 100 hand-drawn designs from the beginning to the end. They are not all mandalas but those that are not are certainly influenced by the artwork associated with mandalas. I really appreciate the wide range of choices in this book.

In addition to the designs, the artist has included interesting suggestions on how and where to color. Also, she has included explanations of what the various colors mean as far as what you may be expressing when you wear (or color with) a particular color, e.g., gold means wealth, elegance, abundance, and success.

The pages are white and are a good weight. The pages micro-perforated for easy removal. The designs are printed on one side with the back of each page left bland.

All of my markers bleed easily through these pages. I have been able to use various gel pens (including Fiskars) with no leak-through. My suggestion is to test your type of marker/pen and if it leaks through, put a piece of thicker paper or chipboard under the page you are working on to keep the following page from getting ink on it. Or you can simply and easily remove the page from the book and not have to worry about it at all.

80 years old and would you believe I'm coloring again!

I bought this coloring book on the recommendation of a family member. The first day I received it I spent 2 hours coloring! I lost track of time, I didn't realize how much fun it was and I couldn't stop. I would say to myself, "one more, one more!" I enjoyed coloring so much that I wanted to share the experience with my community and friends. I started a coloring group three weeks ago and now we have 20 people! More want to join but we need to find a bigger room! Being able to socialize with others in the community is important to me and I find it very relaxing and meditative. Fun, fun, fun! I love that the Artful Mandala is filled with hand drawings rather than the computer generated pictures you see in other books. I love the detailed work put in to the images. The paper is high quality and makes it easy to color. I got in to it so much that I ended up upgrading my color pencils! I'd had such a great time with this book I can't wait for Cher's next book to come out!

We have had some of our best conversations while coloring

I am so grateful to have been introduced to Cher's book. While i originally purchased it for myself, this book has provided hours of treasured moments shared with my sons (ages range from 4 to 17). We have had some of our best conversations while coloring! The drawings vary in design, from classic to contemporary, and the fact that the pages are perforated means that everyone's creative work has been prominently displayed on our fridge at one point or another. My husband--who claims he's the least "artsy" of us all--has even pitched in on occassion. This book makes a great gift, too, since it is totally unexpected!

Great Read for Highway Enthusiasts

A well written and engaging book. Even if you're familiar with the history of the U.S. Interstate system, you're sure to find interesting tidbits and factoids that will keep you turning the pages. It's a pretty easy read with a lot of great photos. A bunch of sidebar stories helped to break things up a bit and keep it interesting for non-highway geeks.

McNichol is a bit fixated on Boston's Big Dig. While the Big Dig was arguably the most aggressive engineering feat in U.S. insfrastructure history, I think it got a little more attention in this book than it deserved. After all, McNichol did already publish a 235 page tome devoted solely to the Big Dig in 2000.

Also, this book has not been updated since it's original release in 2006. Since that time a lot has happened. I-10 in New Orleans completely failed during hurricane Katrina leaving many refugees stranded on flooded surface streets. The I-35W Mississippi River bridge collapse in Minneapolis in 2007 changed the way bridges are inspected yet again and had a far reaching impact on how U.S. highway funds are allocated for transportation safety.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways project may be complete in principle, but it will never actually be finished. As long as our Interstate Highways live, this book will always have relevance and should have periodic updates and revisions.

Surprise Your Friends with Highway Trivia!

Clearly this topic will not be of interest to everybody but for those with an interest in history and the often surprising reasons behind the highway system in the U.S., this book is a joy. You will astound your friends with trivia! How many of them know that Maryland contains the most-expensive (per toll mile) interstate in the Country? (How many of your friends might care, is another story).

Altough it seems to be written in high-school textbook prose, the chapters are well organzined, the photos are wonderful and the format lends itself to the coffee table. It can be read in almost any order, a chapter at at time or even a sidebar at a time.

I now have an appreciation for the engineering marvel that Americans take for granted every day.

Not as deep as I'd hoped, but lavishly illustrated and better than much of what I've read on the topic. I can't decide if the author backed off his in-depth research a bit to try to be more mass-appeal or if this was perhaps pitched at the middle school/high school audience. No matter; if you're a road geek (you know who you are), you'll probably want this.

I purchased this book with hopes of gaining some insight into the theoretical aspects of the modern physics experiments I was working on in a junior laboratory. I must say that this book has been invaluable. The author masterfully details the most fundamental experiments in modern physics, making the material accessible to beginning undergrad students, yet still theoretically rich enough for advanced experimental practice.

Most modern physics experiments can more than likely be referenced somewhere in this book, which serves as a lab manual complete with data samples and example analysis. For myself, the analysis techniques employed in the experiments contained within this book were the most helpful. Any physics student with experience in an advanced lab would agree that data and error analysis are the most critical part of any lab, making this book ideal as a reference.

I give this book five stars, but I must admit only one disappointment with its binding. I read a review, prior to buying this text, stating that the hardcover binding is somewhat prone to wearing out quickly, and indeed I think I have seen the beginning of this demise. However, I have made extensive use of the book, which has undoubtedly contributed to this problem.
Otherwise, I have gotten every cent's worth out of this book!

Not a Good Revision of a Classic Book

The 1st edition by Adrian Melissinos is a classic reference book with a wealth of practical information and data. That book was published in 1966; yet much of the theoretical treatments and methods are still applicable today. This 2nd edition either deleted or replaced some important original material. The 2nd edition did not do a good job in discussing new developments since the publication of the last edition. For instance, in the discussion of the Fabry-Perot method for high resolution spectroscopy, there was no mention of using a piezoelectric actuator which is commonly used at present and a significant development since the publication of the 1st edition. Useful data in nuclear experiments were deleted. A chapter of useful techniques in the 1st edition that deals with useful procedures such as pulse height analysis and basic vacuum technique was deleted.

The best reference around for Libre Office

This covers all the basics of the Libre Office suite. If you only use Libre for everday tasks, then this is all you need.
If your tasks are more advanced, you might want to look at the individual companion volumes.
Libre Office includes word processing, spreadsheets, vector drawing, presentation and a database manager compatible with mysql and others.
This is an amazing piece of software, free, open source and multi-platform. Why anyone would spend big money for the likes of the decidedly inferior MSOffice is completely beyond me. As Barnum (or was it Joe Bessimer?) put it, "There's one born every minute."

Part II (this book) is titled My Firm as it discusses how an established firm could prosper in the contemporary world of globalized competition and technology. Part III: My Startup discusses issues of particular interest to the growing number of youth pursuing an entrepreneurial career. The origins of this trilogy lie in the class notes compiled by the author while teaching 'Management of Technological Innovation' to undergraduate and graduate students from science, engineering and business departments. The final contents have been influenced strongly by the insights derived by him while living and working in India, the UK, Hong Kong (including extensive travels to mainland China), and the USA. Thus, rather than focusing just on the lessons to be learnt from the experiences of a developed country such as the USA (as most books on the themes examined do), this trilogy empathizes with the biases and concerns of the developing parts of the world as well. Among the topics examined in this book (Part II) are diffusion of technology, industry dynamics, competition, competitive advantage, competitive forces, strategy development, research and development, R&D management, technology and market forecasting, organizational culture, and organizational structure.

About the Author
Patri K. Venuvinod is a technology-academic with extensive international experience. Educated at College of Engineering, Osmania University, Hyderabad, and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Venuvinod has a PhD from University of Manchester Institute and Science and Technology (UMIST), U.K.. Subsequently, he was elected as a Fellow of CIRP, Institution of Electrical Engineers (UK), and Hong Kong Institution of Engineers; and Senior Member of Institute of Industrial Engineers. Venuvinod’s 37-year teaching career included long stints at Regional Engineering College, Warangal, India; Hong Kong Polytechnic; and City University of Hong Kong. At the last institute, he was the founding Head of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management. He also became the university’s Chair professor of Manufacturing. During his 25-year stay in Hong Kong he frequently visited mainland China to collaborate on several projects. Venuvinod retired from active service in 2002. However, he continues to be associated with City University of Hong Kong as an Emeritus Professor. In 2004, he co-authored a book on rapid prototyping (published by Kluwer Academic Publishers Kluwer Academic Publishers. In 2001, he founded the International Organization for Developing Universities (IODevUni) which engaged over 22 engineering colleges in Hyderabad, India, in a range of activities promoting the growth of technology, innovation and entrepreneurship (TIE). In 2010 he set up tecinnovent.com to strengthen such activities and publicize TIE-related publications such as his trilogy on TIE of which this book constitutes Part II. Venuvinod welcomes participation in the discussions at tecinnovent.com. A must for all entrepreneurs

An incredibly well researched and insightful work that pulls the elements of technology, innovation and entrepreneurship together in to a 3 book series that is a must of all entrepreneurs.

Each volume takes on a different element of the global economy and provides the reader with insight in to the forces that form and affect the world around us.

As an entrepreneur and executive of a start-up this series provided me with a better understanding of the source of the challenges that I face on a daily basis. A world of research and experience distilled into insight that should be compulsory reading for anyone interested in where we are and where we're heading.

What I like best about this book is that the author gives ...

What I like best about this book is that the author gives the reader a practical step-by-step process to follow for solving math problems. There are many good problem solving books, but most of them focus on specific problems and tactics. This book focuses more on the "process" of how to solve a hard math problem. (Part II of the book gives a number of examples.) A good process is just as important as good strategy and tactics. I noticed in my math classes that most students can solve problems that they have seen before. However, students often feel lost when they are given a math problem that doesn't look like any of the homework problems. I've been experimenting with the author's process, and it does seem to work for many of my students, or at least for the brighter ones. It helps them get past their mental barriers and provides them with a road map to solve unfamiliar math problems. I also enjoyed the author's honesty and sense of humor. He explains how mathematicians solve problems in real practice using methods that really work. I like his idea that "ugly solutions precede beautiful solutions." First you find an ugly solution. Then you "polish the stone" and make it beautiful. It's more of a humanistic view that mathematics is done by real people who are fallible, yet creative. My only criticism is that the problems in Part II of the book are too difficult for the average student. Many students are not well prepared for such problems. Then again, maybe that's the point. The author apparently wants to show how people of average intelligence can solve hard math problems. I've been teaching mathematics for over 20 years, and even I learned a few things from this book.

Excellent reading for teaching about the problem solving process

Full Disclosure -- I may be biased because the author is my friend!

I read one of the initial drafts of this book, and I found it to be very helpful for anyone who wants to learn how to solve complex math problems. In fact, the process could be applied to many other life endeavors.
