About the Author
CHARLOTTE MCPHERSON is an American who has lived in Turkey since 1979. For her graduate studies at Indiana University she specialized in Uralic Altaic languages and history. She has an MA in Anthropology, and during the 1980s she conducted extensive research in Turkey and Central Asia among Turkic-speaking peoples. She has lectured in Social Anthropology at Mimar Sinan University, Istanbul, and has written many scholarly papers and several books. She is currently Vice President of the Turkish-American Cultural Association in Istanbul, where she owns and manages a major English-language bookstore, Greenhouse.

Useful for Your Turkish Visit - Critical Insight into Turks

Living in a multi cultural city and having worked work for foreign corporations have given us an understanding of other cultures and countries. This book digs into the culture of Turkey in ways often ignored by the usual tour book. The usual laundry list of restaurants, sultans, wars, hotels, etc., etc. is not the sole focus of this book. There is certainly a lot of hard information and some historical background included to shed light on the Turkish people. The meat of this book is get in the heads of the Turks you will encounter on vacation or living in Turkey. From broad cultural principles to simple facial gestures the book is a great guide. My trip to Turkey is coming soon, so I cannot compare the book to the trip. However, the author gave a lot of little tips like those that have helped me with other foreign travel and international work experiences. Happy I made the purchase and would recommend.

Worth the price for the new traveler to Turkey

My wife and I have been to Turkey five times. In 2010 and 2011 we spent two months each in central and eastern Turkey. We have learned some Turkish and a smattering of Kurdish. For our purposes, we found this book useful.
It was not so much that it taught us how to act, but it helped us understand much that we observed and experienced. We spent much of our time in Kurdish areas, but the book was equally enlightening there.
One shortcoming is that the book does not delve into the intricacies of dealing with both Turks and Kurds. We sometimes inadvertantly made mistakes, such as asking a Turk if he were Kurdish, or saying "thank you" in Turkish while in a 100% Kurdish village, or later saying "thank you" in Kurdish to a Turk.
This book is most appropriate to the west, particularly Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. Nevertheless, I know of no other book that is as helpful, and I recommend it to anyone who intends to leave the predominately tourist areas.

Really Helpful

Very readable. Essential Guide provides background (history, economics, etc) but moves fairly quickly into cultural considerations (values, attitudes, etc.) so a visitor using the book has some introduction to the nuances of interacting with Turks on their home ground. The chapter on business interactions was especially helpful to me as I make presentations, conduct meetings, etc.
I'd have liked a little more depth on work and social life, but as a primer, very good.
