Necessary Yet Dreary

While a must-read, Yost's writing is dense and difficult. This reviewer has a Ph.D. in French and is therefore not unused to reading arcane and obscure texts. The information could be presented in a much more straight forward style. However, given the fact that audiology programs have a high weed-out component, this could be why this textbook has survived as a leading basic textbook. The skillful reader will be able to appreciate what an exciting discipline audiology can be. It will only be the determined, expert reader who will be able to use the text well. Advice to the young person who is faced with this book: hang in there--yes, it is difficult to read, and no, you should not write this way if it ever becomes your turn to write a textbook!

I bought this for my Hearing Science class. It was required for a "different perspective". Honestly... I looked in it a few times. But the language and substance coverage in the book was way over many of my peers, including myself, and not useful for the class. If you like a technical book filled with tons of information and like a dry read... go for it. But I did not enjoy reading any part of it. Very hard to follow and not easy to read.

About the Author
Frank M. Carrano is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of Rhode Island. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Syracuse University in 1969. His interests include data structures, computer science education, social issues in computing, and numerical computation. Professor Carrano is particularly interested in the design and delivery of undergraduate courses in computer science. He has authored several well-known computer science textbooks for undergraduates. Walter Savitch received his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1969. Since that time he has been on the faculty at the University of California at San Diego and is currently a Professor of Computer Science and director of the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Cognitive Science. Professor Savitch's research areas include complexity theory, formal language theory, computational linguistics, and the development of computer science education materials. In addition to writing numerous research articles and involvement in other editorial projects, he has written a number of well-known computer science textbooks, including Pascal, Ada, and C++ CS1 and CS2 textbooks.

It's a Book About Data Structures and Abstractions with Java

The concepts are pretty well presented and the examples do a good job at reinforcing each topic. My only complaint is that there does seem to be a bit of information missing. I'm not sure if they expect you to remember everything you've ever learned in past Java classes, or if I never learned some of the concepts in depth from said Java classes. My professor supplies his own supplementary materials to go with each chapter due past complaints about the book's lack of explanation on key concepts. Still, It's a fine book with a lot of great information that is logically mapped out.

Examples were often unclear and the writing style was hard to follow. The online videos you get are helpful but the book itself was of very little use to me. My classmates and my professor unanimously agreed.

difficult subject - but a Must read

Daniel's story is one of tragedy and inspiration. The book drew me in and I could not put it down! It captured the emotions and feelings skillfully. The book brings you on a roller coaster ride of anguish to anger to frustration to hope. If you have children or love children, please read this. We all need to be aware of the insidious nature of bullying and realize WE need to take a stand to keep the momentum rolling that the Mendez family and Cool to be Kind (C2BK) clubs have started.

This is a heart wrenching, and heart warming, journey through a family's ordeal. For anyone who is a parent, or knows a parent, this book will open your eyes to the unfortunate reality that our children face every day. It is a story of tragedy, reality and ultimately hope for the future of our kids. I have, and will continue to, pass this story along to as many people as I can.

Please read this amazing but sad story!!!

This was a well written book and so emotionally gripping. I read this in less than 5 days as I was completely drawn into every detail. Some of it was very hard to read as you feel the torture that Daniel experienced as well as his family after his passing. Every parent should read this to understand what our children may be up against on a daily basis. Bullying is a very real thing and as a society there must be no tolerance for this disguisting behavior. The schools need to wake up and make this a priority and protect our children at whatever cost---no exceptions, no excuses. I admire the families strength during the depositions as well as the tenacity of his friend Aiden. Please read this book and pass it on to your friends and family. Spread the word, be an advocate for our kids!! That is what Daniel and his family are asking.

very interesting book

robert weisberg presents a view of genius and creativity base on cognitive psychology which contrasts with the everyday view based on the existence of "special" individuals who produce masterpieces effortlessly. I also found the case studies very informative.

Genius is a 3-part recipe

Recipe for genius:
1) One part: intellect, i.e., high IQ.
2) One part: motivation/determination, i.e., staying focused
3) One part: immersion in field, i.e., being very well-read on the topic and working in it for at least a decade.
Are geniuses smart? Yes, but, as outlined above, that's only one part of being a genius. Without the other two, one isn't going to have a chance at achieving this level of achievement.
The above is the contention of the author and he makes a very compelling case for it. There are a lot of myths and folklore about what a genius is and he expertly tears down them one after another. There are also a lot of mislabeling of who qualifies as a genius. Being intellectually or artistically gifted doesn't necessarily mean one is a genius ... no matter how gifted a person might be.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone that is a scientist, artist, has a high IQ score, or is a teacher, parent or spouse of any of those three.

How to be a genius in six easy steps

Looking at titles that cover 'how to' be creative this book stands out as a sane title amongst the glib 'problem solver' titles that are based on the most 'creative geniuses' of all time. The myth of genius, within this publication, tends to be dispelled.
Genius - that value of creative thought - tends to be more mundane than we expect and perhaps hoped for. Giving up cigarettes isn't easy and there's little reasono that I can see why generating ideas that are creative should be any easier.
This book moves beyond the 'einstein' thinking to show how solid understanding formed the basis of ideas. How a random word (potatoe) didn't lead to the formulation of the theory of relativity.
A book that anyone who wants to consider the importance of balanced thinking (research, review, etc) has in the place of great ideas.
