This is a fascinating book which tells us everything we wanted to know about the foundation stone and what it is really all about from a Jewish perspective. The fact that we can use DMT to break through the veils of 3-D reality to experience the ecstasy of the spiritual worlds is profound. Rabbi Bakst has done the research into the Torah and given us an excellent road map into Jewish consciousness. I have been studying the Kabbalah for almost a decade and know that grasping what the sages are explaining is sometimes difficult. This book is written for almost anyone whether they have a strong background in Kabbalah. I would recommend this book to my students who are looking for a deeper understanding of Messianic Consciousness and who are invested in bringing it into this reality. Bravo Rabbi Bakst!

This book is number three in a truly astounding series which enlightens the reader in many previously concealed aspects of mystical Judaism. The author lays a very solid foundation in the first volume, then builds upon it in the second volume and crowns the trilogy with this volume. Contrary to what the previous review implied, the author does not advocate the use of DMT. He, rather, advocates approaching spirituality and higher states of consciousness using the road-map of kosher ancient Hebrew sources. The DMT referred to in the books is that which is produced by the human brain itself when the spiritual practitioner interacts with spirituality within an exact framework. Perfect follow-up to the documentary "The Spirit Molecule". I didn't lookup Rabbi Bakst until the second time I saw the documentary, and now I've ordered all his books and I'm devouring them.

Sandberg, MA, is a national certified counselor, mobile mental health counselor, and a member of both Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, and Chi Sigma Iota, the International Honor Society in Counseling. Mixed feelings

This book is not as comprehensive as I would like, and it doesn't contain copies of the actual instruments. Instead, it contains links to the instruments. I tested three of the links and they worked, but I'm not confident they will work a year or so from now. So, that leaves me with the option of going through all the links and downloading everything I'm interested in or trusting that I will be able to find a legitimate copy of each measure using Google if/when the links change. The information about the validity of the measures is useful, as this information can be hard to find with free access measures that often have no user manual. The major drawback here is that the list of measures is quite limited. They mention measuring addictions in the title of the book, yet there are only four measures of substance use included (AUDIT, ASSIST, CRAFFT, and OCS)...and the alternative forms of each of these measures are not thoroughly reviewed. The book is a great idea, but needs a lot of expanding to justify the cost. Minus the references, it is only 147 pages.

My recommendation? Don't buy the book. These are free use instruments. Look at the table of contents and find them yourself with Google. You're going to have to look them up on your own anyway since they aren't in the book.

Not my cup of tea

I'm sorry to say, I didn't care for this style of book writing - second person. I picked up this book because EVERYONE uses it as an example of what SECOND PERSON writing is, and that it's a great example of this kind of POV. Well, I'm sorry to differ, maybe I just don't get this second person thing...but it was annoying. Ugh!
I can't say if the writing is good -in it's self, maybe the guy is brilliant, but the STYLE and point of view as second person was just too different for me. I'm giving it a 3 - strickley because I can't tell if its good or not - I put it down pretty quickly. Just be for warned, if you like this style, maybe this book is as good as everyone seems to think.

Stunning

I can see where readers would either love or hate this book. For me, I loved the experience of reading it and have not stopped thinking about it after finishing it. It is full of life -- contradictions throughout, personal failings evident, varying standards of living and responsibility -- and ultimately imperfect. What made this such an enjoyable experience for me was the way in which McInerary constructed the story (even down to his use of 2nd person) and how he drew scenes with such simplicity and such depth. I particularly enjoyed the ending because it totally grabbed me by surprise. This is a classic that did not fail to disappoint.

Mixed feelings.

Book arrived in great condition. I don't read often, but the summary of this book hooked me. I liked the theme of the book, but it seemed a little slow in the middle and didn't give me enough of a resolution at the end to be happy. I ended up throwing the book at the wall after finishing the last page. Even after 2 weeks though, I still find myself narrating my own life like the main characters.

There is humor and warmth, whether Harlen is persuading Will--who is over 40--to play on the all-Native basketball team or to court Louise Heavyhands, or whether he is arranging the lives of his neighbors and friends. Interwoven into the story are the narrator's bittersweet experiences of growing up with his brother, James; enduring the eccentricities of his Native American mother; and wondering about the white father he doesn't remember. These characters all fall within the mainstream of American cultural experience, yet they should expand YAs' multicultural awareness.

Wonderful collection of tales - will make you smile

I loved this. Ir you've heard Thomas King, as on the Dead Dog Café - a short running PBS show - you will recognize the cadence and the tone of stories. These are all connected stories on the "rez". All with a warm and friendly approach, gently mocking at times, but always caring. They make you smile, mostly. I loved it. I looked for the movie, but could not find it anywhere. Fine little piece of literature. Thank you Mr. King.

Gentle, sad, and very funny . . .

I really enjoyed this novel. Like a number of modern Native American authors, Thomas King tells of life among reservation Indians that's free of stereotypes and sentimentality. His central character, Will, a half-breed, lives and works as a photographer in a town called Medicine River, not far from Alberta's Blackfeet reservation. Somewhat passive and resigned to the lot he has chosen in life, his solitude is disrupted almost daily by Harlen Bigbear, a gregarious friend who knows the business of everyone in the Indian community and actively tries to act in everyone's best interest. In other words, he's a meddler.

The novel is a series of loosely strung together incidents, involving Harlen's attempts to make things happen, not the least of which are his efforts to get Will to marry the unmarried mother of a little girl with the unlikely name of South Wing. The present day stories are intercut with flashbacks to Will's past, growing up with a younger brother, their father a white cowboy having long deserted the family. And there are flashbacks to a time in his adult life in Toronto, where he became involved unknowingly with a married woman.

I loved the gentle and ironic humor of this novel, the many characters who spring to life from the pages, and the roundabout indirection of Indian dialogue, including the persistent way in which people seem not to listen to each other. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the North American West, modern day Indians, and a style of storytelling that speaks from heart.

About the Author

Randall Osborn has been teaching classes in rhetoric and public speaking for over twenty years. He received his PhD in Speech Communication from Indiana University in 2003, and his research interests lie in political communication and the intersection between racial identification and the rhetorical construction of a new south. He has taught public speaking and other courses at the University of Arkansas, Indiana University, and Dyersburg State Community College, and has held professorships at Indiana University South Bend, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the University of Memphis. In 1996, he was awarded the Indiana Speech Tradition Award for Excellence in Teaching Public Speaking. He currently teaches courses in oral communication at the University of Memphis.

 

Michael Osborn is Professor Emeritus at the University of Memphis, retiring in 1995 after 30 years as professor and department chair at the University.  He had taught previously at American University and the University of Iowa, where he returned some years later to teach a seminar as the A. Craig Baird Distinguished Visiting Professor.  He also served as visiting professor at the Universities of North Carolina, California-Davis, Indiana, Louisiana State, New Mexico, and Vanderbilt. He served as president of the Southern States Communication Association and of the National Communication Association, and received the distinguished service awards from both organizations.  He also served as chair of the board of Humanities Tennessee, on which he sat for many years as an appointee of the governor. In 1970 he was the nominee of the Democratic Party for the U. S. House of Representatives from Tennessee’s Ninth District. His research has been recognized by the NCA’s Golden Anniversary Monograph Award, the Charles H. Woolbert Award for research of enduring influence, and the Ehninger Award for sustained work in an area of rhetorical study.  The Osborn Award is presented annually by SSCA recognizing a career in the Southern region balanced among outstanding contributions to scholarship, teaching and service. 

 

Dr. Suzanne Osborn received her BA degree in speech from West Virginia University, her MA in speech from the University of Florida, and her PhD in psychology from the University of Memphis. She has had a varied teaching career teaching in the departments of Theatre and Communication Arts, Psychology, and Management at the University of Memphis; the departments of Humanities and Literature and Languages at Christian Brothers University; the department of Marketing and Management at the University of North Alabama; the department of Theatre and Media Arts at Rhodes College; and the department of Management at State Technical Institute at Memphis. She has also been a visiting professor in speech communication at the University of Indiana, the University of California-Davis, the University of New Mexico, and Vanderbilt University. She has been a guest lecturer at the University of Massachusetts, Northeast Missouri State University, and Northwest Mississippi Community College. She has also been a consultant and lecturer on instructor training at Penn State University, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of South Carolina, Texas A & M University, Oregon State University, Dekalb College, and Johnson & Wales University. In addition to her teaching Suzanne Osborn has worked as an organizational psychologist with the City of Memphis, Memphis Light Gas and Water Utilities, and First Tennessee National Bank Corporation. She has also worked with organizational consulting firms servicing such clients as the Kettering Foundation, BASF Wyandotte, and Federal Express.

           

Kathleen J. Turner is Director and Professor of Communication Studies and Director of Oral Communication at Davidson College, where she founded the Speaking Center. She also taught at Denison University, Notre Dame, the University of Tulsa, Tulane, and Queens University of Charlotte, where she was the inaugural Knight-Crane Professor. She serves as President of the National Communication Association in its centennial year of 2014. She has received the Ecroyd Award for Outstanding Teaching in Higher Education from the National Communication Association, the Michael Osborn Teacher-Scholar Award from the Southern States Communication Association, and the Faculty Award from Davidson’s Student Government Association. A rhetorical analyst, she studies communication as a process of social influence, particularly concerning media, politics, popular culture, and women’s issues.  Publications include Lyndon Johnson's Dual War:  Vietnam and the Press (University of Chicago) and Doing Rhetorical History: Concepts and Cases (edited, University of Alabama).  She has also written numerous articles, essays, and book chapters on such subjects as sixties protest music, presidential libraries, the rhetorical analysis of movies, musical and visual invention in television programs, the future of rhetorical studies, comic strips, and the history of product placement.
