I think the author is right on point. His observations about what is missing in the current market are correct. The currrent books are inadequate. I end up reading three books to prepare my course notes. This book seems like it would effectively combine the best features of all three texts.

We do not presently offer a course in environmental law, but we are considering offering one in the future. I would definitely strongly consider using this book.

Great resource for this subject.

This is the easiest to read textbook I've ever used. This is a tough subject and this book makes it easy to understand. It would be great for undergrad courses in environmental law as well as for paralegal courses. It covers all the major environmental acts, and includes interesting features on major environmental events (like the Exxon Valdez spill). It also includes profiles of professionals working in the field of environmental law. Finally, the photos are really good, too.

GREAT book!

It's a textbook for paralegals, but anyone in law or business (anyone with a job in today's world) would benefit greatly from Schroeder's work. Far from the typical global-warming alarmism, this book delivers honesty not only about threats to our natural environment, but those more insidious threats to our society posed by the troubles in our governmental and legal environments. This book is worth buying just for the photos! But the text is truly one-of-a-kind.

Indigestible

Awful book, badly written, disorganized, difficult to read chapters. It's supposed to be written for anyone, not only the legal students and professionals, but I'm finding more difficult to digest than any law textbooks. I read a lot, fiction and non-fiction, and this book is making me dizzy. The writer seems to know about environmental law but she doesn't know how to write about it. I wish my school had picked something else.

This meeting was wonderful..

This is the first book in a new series by Ashlyn Macnamara. Lady Elizabeth Wilde is the oldest of three daughters of The Duke of Sherrington. As the Duke lay on his deathbed, he explains to his daughter that wants her to be married and he is pushing for a union with her cousin, Snowley. The Duke also wants Elizabeth to go ahead with annual house party they always host, because then maybe one of his daughters will find an eligible suitor. Elizabeth is concerned about her father's health and believes he is being poisoned so she goes to Bow Street hoping to hire a runner to find out the truth.

On Bow Street, Elizabeth runs into Dysart. This meeting was wonderful...full of humor and unexpected emotions! Elizabeth decides to hire Dysart and they come up with a plan that he will attend the house party as a guest while trying to dig up facts on if the Duke is being poisoned.

The time these two spent together was great! I loved how Elizabeth was such a strong willed female and how Dysart enjoyed being with her. It was such a fun cat and mouse game trying to figure out what was happening to her father. The suspense of this story line made me not want to put this book down. The sexual attraction between these two was just icing on the cake.

Dysart's backstory added another twist to this tale. The final explosive ending was great. All in all I really enjoyed this book and could not put it down.

Middle of the road read for me

This book hit a solid middle of the road for me. There wasn't anything that particularly stood out for me, but I didn't completely hate it either.

For the most part, I enjoyed these characters. The Wilde sisters were an interesting bunch, and the supporting characters really brought this story together. I especially liked their Great-Aunt who seemed to know more than she let on. In fact aside from the sisters themselves, she was my favorite.

One thing I did find a bit hard to believe however is that Dysart - who has made a career out of being a Bow Street Runner - seemed to have such a hard time getting to the bottom of this mystery. In fact it seemed like he didn't even solve the mystery himself, but rather had the answer land almost squarely in his lap. I felt there could be been a lot more done with his character that would have made him seem more realistic. Also, the fact that he seemed determined to paint one character as the villain simply due to a past encounter was a bit annoying. It seemed as though he was entirely too focused on this one individual and that was the reason he was unable to put things together in a more timely manner.

As for the romance itself, it was sweet. Yes - there is some sexual encounters before marriage (which if this is not your cup of tea, you can just as easily skip over these parts and not miss anything crucial to the story). I felt that they had a romance that sort of blossomed over time, even though you could tell there was an almost instant attraction between them.

Overall, I would continue on with this series if for nothing else than to see what the author does with the other two sisters, as well as see more of Lizzie and Dysart. I would recommend this novel to those who enjoy a little mystery with their romance.

Funny

At first I didn't think I was going to enjoy this book. I felt the beginning stumbled along and didn't flow well at all. When I did start to flow my first thought was Im really going to like these sisters. Lady Elizabeth and her sisters Caro and Pippa had great banter and sarcasm that they reminded me of my own sisters. Dysart is not my favorite hero but he was likable. Lady Elizabeth just had way more personality and whit.
I would like to see where the author takes this series so I'm looking forward to the next book.

Mediocre

I'm working on a project about Curie, so I've read several biographies about her thus far. This book isn't absolutely terrible, but I think it handles Curie poorly. It underexplains much about her life and motivations, gives little due to the science behind her work, and goes out of its way to make her "inner world" excessively dramatic. Curie's story is amazing and fascinating, but this book sacrifices explanatory detail and historical context in favor of an emotionally simplified (and thus more boring) version of the person. Even the title is misleading -- Curie was dedicated to her work and slightly reclusive, but she was hardly an obsessive personality.

I encourage you to please check out the longer but much more engrossing biography by Susan Quinn (titled Marie Curie: A Life (Radcliffe Biography Series)), which provides the historical and scientific context necesssary to make Curie's story really come alive.

A Fascinating Biography

Obsessive Genius is an utterly fascinating portrait of a hallowed and difficult subject. If you are a fan of Goldsmith's work, (I am) you will immediately see that she is the perfect person to give Curie the complexity and dimension she deserves --as a scientist and as a woman. It's a short book which is by turns moving, informative, and intriguingly unexpected. I couldn't put it down.

Captivating

I learned of this book in the magazine section of my Sunday newspaper. I strongly doubted that a nonfiction book would be able to hold my interest for long as they can be so dry and tedious, but the topic sounded interesting, the review was promising and as I am a huge historical fiction reader I thought it might be worth a try. I am so grateful that I ran across that recommendation or I would have missed out on a real gem!

The story grabbed me in right from page one. I couldn't wait to find some free time to be able to get back to reading! While definitely written as nonfiction, the story at times reads like a simple novel with short dialogue, letter excerpts and diary entries. These personal touches add a wonderful element to the book. The scientific explanations were presented very simplistically and were easy enough to understand. They too, added a wonderful and important element to the story.

Marie Curie's life was fascinating: a woman of rare intelligence and genius, she was also plagued by severe depression (especially after the loss of her beloved Pierre) and faced the constant struggle to prove herself and receive her much deserved credit in what was a very male-dominated field. Yet despite these struggles, her devotion to science and her world-changing discoveries never diminished; they enveloped her very soul. I must admit that at times, when reading about her accomplishments and the ease at which science came to her, I felt alittle inadequate and less than intelligent. She was an inspiration!

I was very happy to discover the wonderful coincidence that while I was reading this book, the anniversary of Marie Curie's discovery of radium and radioactivity took place. I strongly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in science, history, women's rights, medicine or just plain life!

Fradkin explains the principles of pronunciation of about two dozen languages and provides clues for identifying the language of a strange word and making an educated guess at its pronunciation. ROBERT A. FRADKIN, Assistant Professor of Hebrew at the University of Maryland, College Park, has also taught Russian and general linguistics. He is author of Stalking the Wild Verb Phrase as well as scholarly articles in his academic fields.

A practical guide

This is a useful and practical guide for anyone presenting classical music on the radio. The most useful section is "Movement 2" (chapter 2) which is an alphabetical list of composers, works and musical terms with phonetic pronunciations. The book's philosophy is that you should try to get as close as possible to the proper pronunciation in the native language, but using only sounds that exist in English. That makes sense, so that your English-speaking listeners can understand the name. "Movement 1" discusses that philosophy and describes how to use the rest of the book.

Movement 3 repeats many of the names and terms of Movement 2 but organized by language. Movement 4 gives general information on pronunciation of many languages, which is useful for names that you come across that are not in the list. There are also "Interludes" that discuss general principles of voicing and pronunciation.

I disagree a bit with some of the pronunciations. For example, for "Camille" (Saint-Saens) it gives "kah-mee'" but if I remember my college French there should be some "L" sound at the end. "de Falla" is given as "duh-fy'-yuh" but I believe "de" should be "day" or "deh". Those are nit-picks however. In general I find the suggested pronunciations very helpful.

The volume was in great condition. I knew already of its value - we use it in the studio, and I wanted my own copy. Well written, thorough, but in very straightforward language. Even those who are not "easy" with languages, I would think, could follow and gain immeasurably from the contents of the book.

Lost classic

Publishers have shown some intelligence by keeping both Stand on Zanzibar and The Shockwave Rider still in print but still show odd lapses of judgement by keeping this book relegated to used book stores instead of reissuing it for all to read. This is definitely better than Shockwave Rider, and more focused than Zanzibar (though not better). It is probably one of the grimmer books to emerge from any genre, I thought On the Beach was depressing, this is even more so. Brunner takes threads and weaves them together to show you a world where the ecology is falling apart, the people who have the money to fix it also have the money to keep themselves above it while the normal people just live with it and can't think that anything will be better. There is a plot, per se, involved with environmental leader Austin Train and his emergence from hiding but mostly the novel is concerned with showing the slow inexorable decline of the world into a polluted and chaotic mess. If you keep reading it looking for some last minute save, some ray of hope, you might as well stop reading because that isn't the point. Brunner isn't showing us how to get out of it (other than an ironic comment made by a character at the very end) but showing us what he thought would happen if we didn't change things. Giving it a specific date dilutes the impact of the book but his message is still as strong as ever and even though we've taken steps to prevent that future, there's still a way to go. Brunner isn't with us anymore and his voice is surely missed, moreso when we read about an oil spill or a forest being cut down for development. Reading his books keeps that voice alive today.

Stick with it

Be patient with this novel. In the begining you are inundated with new charecters and sublots every few pages. It reminds me of watching news coverage during some kind of widespread disaster. The network cycles through 10-15 different locations involving different perspectives and personalities in a very short time. You only glean enough information to realize that the situation is FUBAR; you can never fully relate to any one particular situation or its' human element. You don't empathize with the people in this novel for that reason. I found myself not wanting to invest any more time in this book; there isn't a single character you root for. I am glad I trudged through. The final third of the story is quite good. You've become familiar with the cast and Brunner moves seamlessly from one event to the next.

Stop, You're Killing Me

This classic from John Brunner is a fascinating and terrifying vision of a dysfunctional future in which the worst flaws of modern behavior lead to disastrous results for humanity. Dealing with environmental degradation, the book is surely a fractured masterpiece of human misery and social dementia. There are a few problems with the believability of this book though. Brunner's future is awkwardly projected directly from the Cold War and civil rights struggles of the late 60s, making much of this book's background action quite seem quite dated. Brunner's environmental catastrophes are frighteningly possible if current trends continue to their logical extreme. But the worldwide burning rivers, dead oceans, and poison smog would take centuries to develop and appear rather hysterical in hindsight, as Brunner envisioned these things happening a mere decade after the time he wrote the book. And one fundamental plotting problem here concerns the success of mysterious hero Austin Train in getting many millions of people behind his budding anti-corporate revolution. Brunner implies that Train operates only on charisma and the obvious truth of his message. It is hard to imagine this happening in the real world, regardless of how correct or compelling a revolutionary's message truly is. Brunner also has the tendency to kill off his characters just when they start to get interesting.

But with those problems aside, Brunner still lays out an absolutely brilliant analysis of how American society would deteriorate in the face of an obvious disaster, no matter how farfetched that disaster may be. Those in the political and economic elite will stack the deck in their favor, continuing their lives of comfort while regular people are left to fend for themselves. Anyone who points out obvious problems in the American system (in this case, catastrophic environmental degradation) will be branded as dissidents and traitors, while empty patriotic sloganeering will be the easy answer to those who can't face the truth. The minority will resort to repressive tactics to both reinforce its know-nothing point of view and to suppress the suffering but unorganized majority. Despite this book's particular problems in setting and plot development, Brunner's take on the resulting social and political collapse seems depressingly and terrifyingly possible, and that's what makes this book a winner.
