Great book, but not an introduction.

This book is very readable if you have some knoledge about quantum mechanics. It shows how to calculate things using the theory but does not explain the physical part in much detail.
It makes a good companion to the Feynman book where you have the physics greatly explained but little mathematical detail.
If you are new tho the subject look somewhere else first. If you want to know how to get results from the theory this is the book.

Surviving the Extremes from the Comfort of Your Couch

This book was packed with information about the diseases and conditions that affect the human body when exposed to adverse environments. The exploration of the impact of these environments on the human body was incredibly detailed and fascinating thus the book, for me, became a page-turner. Author Kenneth Kamler offers a graphic description of the various conditions that can affect humans exposed to environments which test their endurance. Being interested in medicine, this book was very alluring and honestly made me excited for the things I might explore in my future education. Kamler details afflictions like Pulmonary Edema, which affects people in extreme high altitudes. He explores its symptoms of “bubbling” sounding breathing, frothy mucus vomit, shallow breathing, coughing, and swollen/blue lips. His narrative allows you to understand how Pulmonary Edema affects people physiologically as pressure decreases with high altitude. Then, Kamler dives into treatment options such as descent and a variety of medications. Finally, once you have a comprehensive knowledge of the disease he continues to explain why it affects certain groups of people more than others, such as the fact that Sherpas, who because they continually travel to altitude, have developed, through the process of natural selection, enzymes which keep them more acclimated to altitude than newcomers or “lowlanders”. Kamler’s detailing of every aspect of these scenarios answers any question you might have about the conditions people face and truly paints a picture of the educational level a doctor must pursue to be successful in what they do. This book is jam packed with other examples of humans dealing with the impact of adverse environments. Every page is riveting and draws you to read on. For me, this book motivated me to learn so that I could bring myself to Kamler’s level of knowledge. I would definitely recommend it to anyone regardless of their interest in medicine, as it is riveting to understand the limits of the human body and how it can continue to surprise us. In true Ethnographic style it immerses the reader into the world of a doctor, and allows full comprehension of the knowledge they must posses and the situations they are faced with. The book brings excitement and education to the same level to allow you this insight. I would rate this book about an 8.5/10.

For those unfamiliar with the author, Kenneth Kalmer was the only doctor on Mt Everest during the 1996 tragedy. This book touches on human physiology and how we adapt to and tolerate extremes in environmental conditions. It contains valuable information with which every adventurer should be acquainted. Though it is written for the layman, this is certainly not the kind of book you can read just before going to sleep. It's pretty heavy on scientific principles.

Dr Kalmer begins with the jungle environment, namely the Amazon forest and swamps. Though heat exhaustion can be a problem here, most of the hazards of this environment seem to come from the denizens of the jungle. Survivors in this environment need to keep a constant lookout for the anopheles mosquito (malaria), black caiman, anaconda, venomous snakes, poisonous frogs and caterpillars, schisto worm (liver parasite), stingray, electric eel and a most interesting creature called the candiru. This is actually a very tiny catfish which has a great affinity for salt. When an animal urinates under water, this tiny creature will follow the stream of urine and lodge itself in the animal's urethra. Surgery is required to remove it.

Ironically, the jungle is also a natural pharmacy that provides medicines to heal the sick as well as poisons for blowdart hunting. No wonder people still live there.

The next hostile environment is the open sea - endless stretches of water, not a drop of which can keep the castaway's body hydrated. Dr Kalmer gives many examples of how castaways survive. The world record is held by Chinese sailor Poon Lim, who drifted on a raft for 130 days without supplies. He collected rain water and used a spring in his torch to catch fish. Methods thought up by other survivors include using improvised solar-powered stoves to distill seawater. The physiology of salt intake, dehydration and starvation are presented along with some coverage on cannibalism at sea.

The scorching desert is an even more hostile environment that causes heat exhaustion, dehydration and starvation to set in even more rapidly. Dr Kalmer explains in detail how the body regulates temperature and maintains a constant internal environment. He also explains how this system can break down under extreme external temperature and dehydration. Death occurs with the loss of 15-20 litres of body fluids. However, defying the limits of human physiology, is one Mauro Prosperi, who claimed to have survived for 9 days in the desert without any water.

Diving medicine is a very big topic by itself, but Dr Kalmer gives us the essentials on what happens to the body during free diving, the mechanics of SCUBA as well as the causes of decompression sickness. As with the other environments, many examples of diving accidents along with a microscopic view of what went on inside the victims' bodies are presented.

High altitude medicine is one area where Dr Kalmer has the most firsthand experience. Bringing out actual situations he encountered on Himalayan expeditions, the author presents a flowing account of Himalayan expeditions alongside an "insiders'" view of the characters' bodies. The mechanics of AMS (acute mountain sickness), HAPE (high altitude pulmonary edema), HACE (high altitude cerebral edema) and frostbite are neatly woven into the story. Dr Kalmer even proposes a somewhat controversial evolutionary advantage that the Sherpas may have over other people. Even more surprising but factually indisputable, is his mention of the "miraculous" survival of Beck Weathers and Pasang Sherpa.

The final chapter is really out of this world - space adventure. Space is the ultimate hostile environment combining extreme cold, extreme heat, vacuum and cosmic radiation from which the human body must be almost completely insulated. Topics covered include the physiological effects of G force and zero gravity. Also mentioned are research projects into building self-sufficient spacecrafts for interplanetary exploration. Interesting hypothetical situations are presented and Dr Kalmer manages not to bore the reader with his wit and humour.

Overall very interesting

You may or may not like this book, and it depends on whether or not you wish to know the medical reasoning behind what happens to the human body at its very extreme limits. Since I am interested in this I purchased this book. Dr. Kamler breaks it into 6 categories:

1) Jungle

2) High Seas

3) Desert

4) Underwater

5) High Altitude

6) Outer Space

I prefered 1, 2 and 5 the most. The medical explanations are actually quite interesting and usually not too dry for the casual reader of all things science related, like myself. If you have any experience in any of these extremes, like long distance running through the desert, then of course you might find those sections more interesting than I did. Since I was stuck on an 8 hour flight twice in 5 days and this book was my only reading material I finished it pretty quickly, but quite honestly, were it sitting on my nightstand it would have taken me some time to finish it I am guessing, as the subject matter at times tended to drag a bit in the medical explanations, (meaning some concentration required) but otherwise it is a quite interesting book, full of insight into the human medical condition and its remarkable ability to heal itself when faced with trauma or extreme weather conditions.

He has designed user interface software, primarily for medical equipment applications, for the last seven years. A contributor to Embedded Systems Programming magazine, his writing and consulting practice is based in Galway, Ireland. Incredibly poor

This book is so thin on content as to make it unusable for real development work. The actual number of pages devoted to user-interface software design is TINY. With luck, it might fill out an acceptable overview article in a magazine.
All the rest is fluff. For example, I was appalled by the amount of space the author devoted to a beginner's introduction to C++ concepts and syntax. (That chapter is longer than the one on the use finate state machines in UI implementation...)
Finally, the author's approach to the whole process of UI software design is very ad hoc; it's not a methodology at all, and what he does is certainly not "engineering".
A much better choice is Ian Horrocks' "Constructing the User Interface with Statecharts". It shows a reusable, scalable SOFTWARE ENGINEERING approach to UI software development -- something that Niall Desmond Murphy doesn't seem to understand...

Disappointing

As a software "old hand" in embedded systems for way too many years, I ought to know better than to be taken in by the hype on this book. But, I blew it. This was a waste of money. The examples are misleading, the text is just plain wrong in far too many places, and the direction he takes in instructing is insulting. Then to cap it off, the compiler he wrote the examples for is very old. I have used Borland compilers since Turbo-Pascal days, and I used BC3.1 for years (still have it on one of my systems), but I would not recommend them today as they have been passed by. He obviously has had experience in embedded user interfaces, but this book will not help novices learn the how, where, or why of the subject in a way that they can use for the future. My recommendation is to pass on this one...

This book covers embedded system design without forgetting the original reason for it -- the user. A truly balanced approach to the problems in this domain. Many years worth of hard-won wisdom about embedded system design AND the users of embedded systems. You can learn it from him, or the hard, expensive way. Fun reading for an "old hand", besides.

You get what you pay for

For a cheap price, cheap content. I won't buy any more from Marco. Title promises more. Too much on X10 and storing data in cloud. Examples are well-written and easy to follow. I've completed several pieces projects and was hoping to find new projects. Disappointed. Amazon sample was poor. I'd like to see middle of book,and not intro, preface, and not much else. Less than thirty minute read.

Great book for beginners

It’s an interesting book, I got a Raspberry Pi for Christmas and didn’t really look at it until now…3 months later! I was a bit intimidated by it because it seems like there’s a ton of different programming knowledge I’d need to have to make this work. This is why I got this book, it’s more like a guide really, lots of pictures and a good explanation for a beginner like me to match up and learn. The book also offers resources at the end chapters for future learning.

Definitely not Elizabeth Eulberg's best

I hate to say it but Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality is my least favorite of Elizabeth Eulberg's books. All of her previous books have ended up on my favorites list and I just can't say the same for this one. While I still enjoyed it, I find myself forgetting about it already.

Lexi was my biggest problem. She had absolutely no confidence in herself. She thought that the only way she could interact with guys was if she cracked jokes and acted like she didn't care about anything. She considered herself ugly just because she didn't wear a ton of makeup or dress super girly. I get that living in the pageant world made her feel bad about herself but it really bothers me when girls act like makeup and clothes are the only things that could make someone pretty. I wanted to slap Lexi so many times because she was just so oblivious! Also, her friends got on my nerves a bit too. One of them only added to her thoughts that makeup and clothes are all that matter and the other one got angry about nothing in particular and acted kind of bitchy. They weren't horrible, by any means, but they weren't nearly as awesome as the friends in Elizabeth Eulberg's previous books.

The story itself was a little shallow but it was entertaining. Lexi decides to transform herself so that guys will finally start to notice her. Little does she know how well it will actually work. One day as her new self and guys are falling all over her and Lexi's life completely changes. It was a little unrealistic but it made for a pretty fun story.

Oh, also, I have to mention Lexi's family and how bad they were! Oh my gosh I would have become an emancipated minor if I had her mother. She is probably one of the worst moms I have ever read about, ever. She had two daughters but she really only seemed to care about one and it wasn't Lexi. Every thought revolved around pageants even though they had no money for them. There's one point in the book where I really probably would have murdered her if she had been my mom. And Lexi's little sister came across as this huge spoiled brat for most of the book but by the end I did like her.

One other flaw I had with Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality was the ending. Things seemed very unresolved and I was left wondering what happened. The ending worked but it's not what I wanted at all. It just bothers me when things are left hanging.

Overall, if you're a fan of Elizabeth Eulberg, check out Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality. However, if you've never read any of her other books, I'd recommend starting with one of them rather than this one.

This Book is a lot of fun!

Lexi has a great personality. She is funny and is a lot of fun to be around. Everyone likes her, but no one wants to date her. Add to that the fact that Lexi's kid sister is a beauty queen who controls all of the attention and you have one self-deprecating heroine. Lexie doesn't think she's beautiful and doesn't think she'll get the guy, until her best friend challenges her. If Lexie wants her bf Benny to take the plunge then Lexie must put some effort into her looks. Lexie dolls up and so her revenge begins. The girl with the great personality is actually pretty hot.

This book is a lot of fun. It is charming, sad in some places and the characters will frustrate you, but it is honestly an enjoyable read. Lexie is an average teenage girl. She has her two best friends, has issues with her parents and thinks a lot about boys, but she is not whiney or annoying. She is a likeable heroine, because she takes life in stride. She wants things her mom cannot afford to give her? That's cool; Lexie gets a part time job and meticulously saves her money. I like that about her.

I like Lexie, but hate her family. Her sister is spoiled and her father is a deadbeat who pretends not to be, but it is her mother who I despised. First of all, I have no respect for parents who dress their children up like adults and parade them around a stage. Second, any parent who favors one child and ignores the other does not deserve children. Lexi is marginalized and treated like second best, while her sister is treated like a princess. Lexie is forced to be apart of the pageant team, spending her free time supporting and working for her little sister. It is disgusting. Her mom doesn't support her in anyway. She just expects Lexie to take the abuse and fall in line. I have never been supportive of open rebellion, the way I supported Lexie. I wanted her mom brought low.

This book is entertaining, but not genius. I saw every twist and turn coming a mile away. Not a single action taken by the characters surprised me. The great thing is that I didn't care. I just really liked reading Lexi'a journey.

It doesn't get four stars or higher, because I did not like the ending. It wasn't a horrible ending, but a lot seemed unresolved. What is Lexie going to do about Tyler? When will Benny and Lexie realize that they were awful friends to Cam and make amends? What about Lexie's relationship with her parents? Have they learned their lesson? Will they evolve? Will Lexie simply have to leave her parents behind?

My final thought is that there is nothing wrong with putting on a little make-up or wearing fancy clothes. I like make-up and I have been known to splurge on a pretty dress. If you decide to be what the author refers to as a "glam girl" that is your right. Not every girl who dresses up, does that to impress anyone or to gain the attention of the opposite sex. Also, not every girl who puts on some foundation and eyeliner is going to be the sexiest girl in the school. Lexie puts on a dress and the entire school population is stumbling all over themselves, because wow she's pretty. Have you actually seen a pretty girl without make-up? She is still very pretty. So, for everyone to be like "OMG!" just because she put down her hair and put on some make-up, I found it wrong and misleading. Sixteen year old girls, who feel the way Lexie feels, are going to read this. It is not ok for them to believe that just putting on an expensive shirt and some eyeliner is going to make all the boys fall in line.

Beauty comes from within. Everyone has to learn to love themselves, before they can expect someone else to love them. That is something my mother said to teenage me as I struggled with body issues and the fact that I am not the most attractive girl. She was right. I think by the end of this book, Lexie would agree with my mom's sage old wisdom.

I am a girl with a “great personality”. I’ve known this about myself since high school, when the boys would like me, but like-like my friends. I’ll let you in on a little secret though – it’s always been something I’m happy about. Sure, I might have wished that I got more attention from the opposite sex or even just from other people in general. But I liked being the girl who everyone could get along with or be friends with. It gave me free rein to concentrate on writing and on school and on other fun obsessions, like boy bands and books.

So when I first heard about The Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality, it was a sure bet I was interested in seeing just what Lexi would do about her “great personality” reputation. What I didn’t bargain on was discovering that this book was not only about a GP (great personality) girl who snagged the attention she craved; it was also about friendships and family and finding complete confidence in being the best version of you. The author manages to weave all these elements into a cohesive plot, and I found myself speeding through the pages until I reached the end.

Lexi is funny and intelligent, and it was easy to like her immediately. This doesn’t surprise me, as she is supposed to have that “great personality” touted in the title. I was all for her embracing her best self, as it’s fairly obvious at the start that she’s hiding a few things, but I wasn’t exactly the biggest fan when she went overboard with her transformation. Even if I didn’t like her attitude/personality transplant, I could understand it – everyone has that desire to simply be liked and noticed. I do like how, eventually, she realizes that she can be a girl with a great personality, but one who does make an effort to put her best foot forward in the world, in terms of appearance and otherwise.

It’s no surprise that Lexi is quickly swayed to embrace her physical transformation. It brings her attention and lends her an air of confidence she’s never had before, all things that she needs in the face of the extremely sad home situation she lives with. Her father is absent from her life, her sister is the pride and focus of the family and her mother… her mother is just the worst, contributing to the stress, low self-esteem and hidden anger Lexi harbors.

Lexi becomes someone that makes me very proud at the end of the book, and I liked that. Her confidence in who she was and her conviction about what was right for her certainly made me want to applaud when I finished. We all need that one life-changing moment where we realized that it’s okay to be yourself, but that we need to attempt to be the best version we can be.

Of course, in this book, there are the boys. I quite liked Taylor from the very beginning, as Logan struck me as a typical popular kid. The romance isn’t the main focus of this book, but of course it played a part in Lexi discovering what she really wanted versus the things she had thought she wanted.

And then there are Lexi’s two amazing best friends, Benny and Cam. They’re such a fun trio together, and I like how they both were supportive of Lexi in different ways. Benny is the one who encourages her to embark on this journey where she fixes up her appearance, while Cam on the other hand reminds Lexi that there’s nothing more important than who she is versus what she looks like. I would like to have Cam and Benny in my own life, as they pretty much rocked at being Lexi’s friends.

The book shows the reader what pageants are like, particularly the ones held for kids. It was both fascinating and horrifying to witness how the pageants worked and what was asked of the kids, particularly when it came to the amount of work, practice and even money spent on them. It simply seemed crazy to me that some people would pursue this way of life to the point of financial instability (like Lexi’s mom, for instance), especially considering the fact that these are kids we’re talking about. But for the purposes of the book, it worked.

In the end, the only major issue I had in this book was the way that there was no resolution when it came to Lexi’s mother or father. I felt like these two were the loose threads that deserved to be further explored and possibly tied up neatly, and it was weird to end the book feeling like I wanted to still yell at her mother.

I really enjoyed reading The Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality, more for Lexi’s journey than for anything else. It was fun to see how changing up her appearance kick-stated a change in her mindset and confidence level, and I was definitely rooting for her. Even though things felt a bit unresolved at the end with her parents, I’m choosing to believe in only the best for Lexi and her future, and I’m sure you will too.

VERY misleading title

I preordered this book with great expectations that at least 90% of it would contain pictures from the wedding. To my chagrin, this was not so at all. I think you should include this "little" fact in your description of the book. I am sure that most of the people who ordered this book will be equally disappointed. I may yet return it because it was certainly NOT what I wanted.

Wills & Kate's Wedding

As an avid Royal watcher I was very excited to see that Life had put together a Royal Wedding. Although Life is a well respected media outlet I was greatly disappointed in the book I received. For one, the book is 'thin' for a commerative eddition. Secondly there were about 5 pictures of the wedding, making majority of the book about Will & Kate's life leading up to the wedding. If you want a nice collector's edition on this historically epic event I would strongly suggest the commerative additions of Newsweek, US magazine (one of the best out!!), & TIME magazine. LOTS of wedding photos! Also, their family history & of course their university days. More tastefully done. Bottom line. LIFE is a disappointment & I will be returning my copy.

VERY Disappointing

I was expecting a book ON the wedding itself. There was certainly enough going on to fill a book. Instead, 3/4 of the book is cut and paste from previous publications specifically, The Royals & The Royal Wedding. What's UP with that?

I would have rated this a no-star if I could...

About the Author
Ilias Bantekas is Professor of International Law and Human Rights at Brunel University and a senior fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London. He has advised law firms, governments and international organisations in most areas of international law, including international arbitration. Alongside his academic career he served as head of international law and arbitration at a Legal500 law firm.

Lutz Oette is Counsel at REDRESS, an international human rights organisation seeking justice for torture survivors, and lecturer at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). He has pursued human rights cases before several regional and international bodies and engaged with a range of actors in comparative research, advocacy and reform projects aimed at developing and implementing international human rights standards.

as bad as DHL

I am rating this as 1 star because:
1- They chosen to use DHL as the shipping company and for country as Saudi Arabia hmm lets just say I cannot think of any other shipping Co. as bad as DHL. They suck badly so I lost extra few days just becuase DHL to lazy to search for my phone number on this shipment info and to make things worse they clearly asked me to visit them to give them my info which was there written in the system but they actually wanted me to drive all the way to other side if the city to DHL warehouse to get my shipment OR to wait an extra day! So yes Amazon+DHL+SA Jeddah= extra lost time and very ugly experience.

2- The backing was BAD really bad it is not even a box! you have to work on that too, I found dirty finger prince in the inside of the white papers.
