Each chapter of the memoir is accompanied with an essay outlining a relevant principle Offerman claims may lead the reader to a better life. The veracity of some of his statements may be called into question—vegans will bristle at his position on meat (eating red meat gives one character) and Millennials will not appreciate his dismissive attitude towards GPS devices and smartphones—but Offerman openly admits on the first page that what works for him may not be everyone&'s glass of scotch. Review if you are a Ron Swanson/Parks and Rec Fan

Here the situation.

If you like Ron Swanson. Don't get this book. This is not "Parks and Rec: The novel". This is an autobiography. I think 90% of the complaints are from people who expected this book to be an extension of Ron Swanson character - talking about eating lots of meat and complaining about Tammy 2. Instead, they got a book about an actors rather ideal life in middle America, his entry into the theater world and his struggle to finding acting jobs in LA.

The books is however, HILARIOUS. Nick talks about his life in a very open and honest manner, going over both mistakes and victories. He is middle of the line political person, but also has strong views and yes, a pretty libertarian stance. He pulls no punches making fun of folks who are dependant on technology - since ALOT of folks are depenant, I'm sure many of the complaints here are from folks who were likely irked by his constant ribbing of folks who can't line with Instagram, a GPS and would die with two hours if left alone in the wilderness.

If your an open-minded person (which most people are not) then this is a VERY helpful book. He has alot of earthy advice on everything from drug use, to dating, to sex, to eating right, work ethic, etc. NICK OFFERMAN IS NOT RON SWANSON. Nor does he claim to be. Ron Swanson is an over-the-top version of Nick Offerman, written by writers who knew Nick. Nick Offerman does enjoy fishing, immensely. He doesn't not perfer hunting, tho understands many do. Nick Offerman eat's salad and veggies, but won't turn away a nice steak. Nick Offerman likes to hit the bong and watch Twin Peaks, as opposed to Ron Swanson who would mostly be found carving 1/110th 18th Century Spanish Gallon from a fallen tree near his cabin with nothing but a pen knife. He does not even mention Ron Swanson until the very last chapter.

If you are a hardcore, totalitarian conservative, Nick will probably say something to irk you. If you are a hardcore, bleeding liberal Nick will probably say something to irk you. He's not doing it on purpose - he's just in the middle of the political spectrum and is making his views clear, usually with some humor attached.

IF you are Ron Swanson/Parks and Rec fan you need to do this: Before you buy this book, then scream to high heaven and post a nasty review of it because it doesn't have things like "Ron Swanson's chart of needs" - think for a second. Look up Nick Offerman. Yes. N-I-C-K O-F-F-E-R-M-AN. Watch an interview with him on Conan O'Brien or something on Youtube. Realize that this is a person's autobiography and not a joke book.

Then once you do that, then you can ease into the tranquil warmth of what is Nick Offerman's sage-like advice and story telling.

I love the way Offerman writes

Hilarious book! I love the way Offerman writes, and especially what he focuses on. It's very refreshing to see a denim and leather midwestern perspective through the filter of Hollywood. Offerman is true to his core beliefs and values, and yet has seen success in the fast paced and very different life of a hollywood actor. A little liberal for my taste at times, but the main point is that he's a guy who sticks to who he is, has a worldview of hard work and being true to yourself, and doesn't expect anything from anyone else. The middle part where he autobiographically talks about his journey into Hollywood drags a lot, but has some funny stories peppered in to prevent me from putting it down altogether.

Inspiring and motivating, more than an autobiography, less than perfect, but a great read, and a great wake up call to an entitlement society and mustachless men everywhere....like me.

Nick Offerman is a God Among Men

Nick Offerman is great. I was not sure what to expect out of this book, because I had mostly seen him in Parks and Rec but after watching his special American Ham I thought I'd give it a read. 10/10 would recommend. I also listened to the audio version of this book, and it is so good.

Nick Offerman is a god among men, and this book literally had me laughing out loud. He gives you an insight of how he started out (I could not believe that he was classically trained in theatre) and he talks about where he is today and his wife.

This workbook does not come with an answer key. Contacted the company and was given several numbers to call to see about getting an answer key. No one seemed to know if one existed.

This is a very large book for what I thought was a good price. However there is no answer key which means I have a lot of extra work grading the work. I would not recomend buying this book.

waste of time

I don't know if the author is a 13 year old girl, but all her characters, irrespective of age and gender sound like one. This is a terribly written book that no one should read. There are more pleasurable ways of losing brain cells.

confusing relationships, thin plot, zero character development

Andria is the newly famous author of a popular romance novel. Andrew is an A-list movie star. (Did their names HAVE to be so similar?) They meet accidentally in a bar in DC and he is in extreme instalove with one look. She has loved Andrew from afar for years and even based the hero of her book on him, so Andria is instantly enamored, as well.

Btw, the fact that she based her character on Andrew is supposed to be a big conflict in the story and she is scared to death throughout the entire book to tell him this. I never understood why this was such a big deal!? Who cares?!? He should be flattered and turned on, not angry.

Anyway, there's a lot of ridiculous, repetitive dialogue. The characters are 2-dimensional and never really change. I couldn't believe how clueless Andrew was when it came to certain people in his life working against him.
The biggest problem with the story was that, even though there was instalove, there should have been SOME development of their relationship. But it seemed like they went from nothing to all in, even with her incessant (and boring/annoying) doubts, in a microsecond. And the fact that his family latched onto her so quickly was almost creepy.

Then there's a million side characters popping in and out. Erin, Andria's best friend, has a serious boyfriend but you don't find out until 4/5's through the story that he is white and she is black and his family objects to interracial relationships. I would think this would be a big deal--it's one of the biggest potential conflict points in the story--but it has nothing to do with the main characters AND it's given as a throwaway line and then forgotten. Weird.

There's a giant cliffhanger which I'm not even sure I care about. You can see exactly where this is going. Sometimes, when I really like the characters, I might not mind a predictable plot or lack of conflict but, in this case, I just have zero investment in these people so I'm not sure I care enough to keep reading the series.

Too bad. Could have been better.

I love the dynamic between these two characters and the relationships ...

The Trouble with Dating a Movie Star is the story of author Andria Moore who accidentally bumps (almost literally) into the movie star who inspired her bestselling book, Andrew Hughes. That first meeting leads to many more and eventually Andria’s fantasy begins to become reality as their relationship begins to develop. The series of meetings between the two seem almost fated and soon they give into fate and set off on world wind relationship.

I love the dynamic between these two characters and the relationships with all the people that surround them. There is humor and romance once these two characters give in to their feelings and manage to find some time alone. Andria, who has never dealt with fame and fortune is suddenly thrown into a world that is dominated by the same. Not only is she having to adjust to her own success, she is also having to deal with the scrutiny that comes along with dating the hottest actor and all the rumors that surround him. She quickly learns that not everything is what it seems in Hollywood and you defiantly never believe everything you read in the tabloids.

At the same time, Andrew is having to learn that not everyone understands what his life is like and has to figure out a way to keep Andria in his arms while keeping her safe from the scrutiny and rumors that surround him. While trying to keep Andria out of the every watchful eyes of the paparazzi he makes many mistakes that make Andria doubt his true feelings. With the help of family and friends these two characters manage with overcome their obstacles and manage to find a way to be together and admit their love for one another.

This is book one of the Red Carpet Series by Z. N. Willet. Book two, The Trouble with Marrying a Movie Star, is already out. While I have not had a chance to read that one yet, I can’t wait to read more of the highs and lows of Andria and Andrew’s relationship as they take their love story to the next level.

About the Author
Beverly A. Lewin has extensive experience in teaching scientific writing to Ph.D. students from non - English speaking backgrounds. Since 1980, she has taught students in fields ranging from astronomy to zoology, with the majority in the social sciences. Her own research focuses on scientific discourse, especially genre analysis and managing interpersonal relations in texts (hedging and politeness). Her research on genre analysis is presented in Expository Discourse: A Genre-Based Approach to Social Science Texts (coauthored with Jonathan Fine and Lynne Young, Continuum, 2001) and From Hedging to Heightening: Toning Down and Up in Scientific Texts (Melbourne Papers in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, 2001).

Brief yet comprehensive reference textbook

This book is an excellent resource guide for anyone interested in improving their ability to present scholarly-oriented information in a readable format that conforms to audience expectations and the demands of English. While designed for use in a university writing course, it can also be used for self-study, and is especially helpful for non-native speakers of English. Lewin draws on her extensive teaching experience to craft a relatively short volume that addresses all the critical components of scholarly writing. In a reader-friendly way, Lewin provides a concise review of the constraints of scientific writing, reviews critical grammatical elements, touches on stylistic considerations, and explains each of the major sections of research papers. Additional chapters address the challenges of creating conference papers for oral delivery, writing abstracts, and writing professional letters. Lewin truly covers all the bases. Throughout the chapters, multiple well-chosen examples and occasional practice exercises strengthen the book's value. The author consistently anticipates the kinds of questions and concerns that academic writers will have, and she addresses their needs with humor and compassion. Teachers and students (particularly graduate students) will find this book a very useful textbook or reference tool.

Writing Readable Research

This book is extremely useful as a guide for students in higher education wishing to develop their academic writing. Above all it reflects a deep understanding of how students can gain confidence in communicating about their research with others in the field.

Drawing on her vast experience of practitioner research and a functional linguistic approach, Beverly Lewin has strongly focused on important contextual aspects that underlie the development of good writing but that are little appreciated in mainstream teaching and learning at Higher Education level. Although her book is less than 200 pages long, it systematically covers a great deal of ground positioning key micro-features of English within the range of academic written genres. It engages the reader's awareness to the importance of understanding text purpose so as to make effective language choices by presenting and discussing a rich array of examples in a personable and friendly style.

Readable and Practical

In Writing Readable Research, Beverly Lewin hones in on her many years of expertise in genre-based writing instruction. Using insight both from genre theory/pedagogy and her rich experience in teaching research-based writing to higher education EFL students, Lewin has written a very "readable" guide to writing academic papers. Her concise guidelines, practical tips, and helpful examples are "sprinkled" with hints of humor as she "tells it like it is" to new and not-so-new research-writers. As a doctoral candidate and EFL college writing instructor, I can say that Lewin's book has become one of the fastest-worn books on my bookshelf!

Mahaffey's history lesson begins along a familiar path, from 17th-century chemist Robert Boyle to the great 20th-century physicists. Nazism and WWII sent hundreds of scientists—and their cutting-edge work—to the U.S. But the war also sent that research underground in the ultra-secret Manhattan Project. Researchers also dreamed of peaceful atoms to generate electricity and run submarines, planes and rockets. The specters of Hiroshima and a few horrifying nuclear accidents displaced that peaceful vision. About the Author
James Mahaffey was a senior research scientist at the Georgia Tech Research Institute where he worked under contract for the Defense Nuclear Agency, the National Ground Intelligence Center, the Air Force Air Logistics Center, and Georgia Power Company. He is the author of Atomic Awakening and Atomic Accidents and lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

Reader Praise for Atomic Awakening

This book is fascinating. The material is beautifully organized and surprisingly entertaining. It tracks atomic/nuclear research from earliest days to the present, when many countries already generate sizable percentages of their electrical power from nuclear reactors. As a liberal arts major, I wasn't sure I would understand much of this, but the writing is aimed at anyone interested in the subject. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and learned a great deal. Anyone interested in nuclear energy as clean, safe power - pro or con - would be glad they read this book.

Theory and Practice - a balanced approach

The Holy Trinity of science best sellers like Brian Green's "The Elegant Universe or Walter" Issacson's "Einstein: His Life and Universe" has been people, history and science. James Mahaffey's Atomic Awakening breaks this mold with addition of application, interrelation and a point of view.

Mahaffey, a nuclear engineer as well as physicist, gives an extremely readable, no entertaining, history of nuclear physics. He also explains the science better than any other book I've read on physics. Because he shows the interrelation of theory and practice I finally understand Heisenberg's theory of uncertainty and why the key to a nuclear reactor is to slow down, not speed up, the neutrons. That is, if you cannot know with certainty where the Uranium atoms are you have a better chance of hitting one if the added neutrons spend more time in the target area by going slow!

Mahaffey brings the theory to practice without editorializing by comparing the devil we know with the devil we don't know. His well quoted example that if the first use of gasoline was napalm we would all be driving electric cars is dead on. Mahaffey describes the dangers of a nuclear accident, balances that with the cost of non-nuclear alternatives, then leaves the conclusion to the reader.

Thoroughly fascinating -- serious subject

A thoroughly fascinating book about a serious subject. The author provides a very interesting history of the birth and development of the atomic age and sprinkles it with numerous, little known facts and stories to personalize the adventure. The book makes a strong case for the pursuit of nuclear energy in the U.S. at a time when that industry is resurging around the world, and may be awaking in the U.S. Through factual presentation, understatement, and a dry wit, the author presents the case for nuclear power to the reader and allows the reader to reach his own conclusons. I had difficulty putting it down until I had finished it.
