Paul Harris and the Birth of Rotary, by Fred A. Carvin

In 1905, Paul Harris started a movement that today is one of the world’s premiere service organizations. His creation, Rotary International has quite literally touched the lives of hundreds of millions of people in its global quest to make a difference. Yet few people, both inside and outside of Rotary know much about Paul Harris or how his ground-breaking club developed. This number includes a majority of current Rotarians who have little knowledge or understanding about the man who started it all. For over a century, the relevant facts about his life and motivations have been clouded by myths and misconceptions. Now, with the discovery of hundreds of never before published letters, documents and exclusive archival sources, a better comprehension of the man and his times has emerged. This latest material gives new insight to who Paul Harris was. It provides answers to questions like: How did his early life in rural Wallingford, Vermont help forge his thoughts about Rotary? What role did his parents and grandparents play in developing his later actions? What happened during his college years that affected him for the rest of his life? Who were the men and women that influenced his ideals? When did Rotary and Paul Harris change directions and become more humanitarian? This book offers an in-depth look at how Paul Harris and early Rotary came into existence. It’s the story of one man’s struggle to find his inner self and how his philosophy changed the world.

Very informative, but too long
By Thaddeus Rex
You've got to do a lot of skimming to get through this puppy. I'm a big fan of Rotary, and learning the history of Paul Harris and how he started Rotary is fantastic. If you're looking for Rotary history, start with chapter 20. Then branch out to read whatever else interests you. If you want to know every single detail of Paul Harris's including his father's career and motives, then grab a blanket, make sure the fireplace is well stocked and prepare for a very long and informative read.

Paul Harris and the Birth of Rotary
By Larry Powe
This is an easy read. After overlooking a tremendous amount of grammatical errors throughout, as a Rotarian for ove 35 years, I was able to get a glimpse of the man, Paul Harris. The author obviously did a great deal of research for this writing. He oftentimes poses anecdotes in a way that has the reader conclude that verification is impossible. As in anyone's life, there are truths and then there are two different stories, interpretations, inadvertent fabrications, and just down-right lies. The author is very careful to advise when some of his related stories about the founder of Rotary International are more lore than factual. I recommend it.

Good story "marred by careless errors"
By Suzanne S. Barnhill
"Marred by careless errors" is what my high school English teachers used to write when correcting papers. As a copy editor, I found this book so painful to read that I deferred it till Lent, regarding it as penitential reading (and I've still reached only page 39). It is really a shame that a book with so much good information should suffer from such poor (or, more likely, no) copy editing, a common failing of self-published books.

It is not unusual for me to read a book with pencil in hand, but to have to make dozens of corrections on every page is quite unprecedented. When the author manages to avoid errors of grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, or syntax, he introduces logical errors that are often risible (I collect this kind of "howler," but I could start a new collection with this book). Dangling participles are just the beginning of his problems. One example: "At some point, the slow ticking of the old banjo clock that hung on the north wall, working in harmony with the sitting room clock began chiming attention to the lateness of the hour." Hmm, the ticking began chiming, eh?

As a Rotarian (20 years with perfect attendance, and daughter of a Rotarian with 50+ years of perfect attendance), I would be willing to read all the tedious background (mentioned by other reviewers) if the writing were not so flawed, but this book is really testing my devotion to Rotary.

There is no question that the author has done his research. It is meticulously documented--even to the point of absurdity, as when a straightforward description of the location of Wallingford, Vermont ("The village of Wallingford is located almost ten miles south of Rutland, nestled in a small valley between two ranges of the Green Mountains"), has a footnote citing "AAA Road Map 2006 edition and MapQuest." Perhaps the 50+ pages of notes could have been reduced if some such had been omitted.

I appreciate the work the author has done in compiling this information. I just wish that I (or some other copy editor) had had a chance to edit it before it was published. I would also have made recommendations about the layout. The size of the book makes it less than ideal to hold and read; reducing the leading would have resulted in a thinner or perhaps smaller book. But at least the double spacing allows plenty of room for corrections (there is none in the skimpy margins).

Worldmaking: The Art and Science of American Diplomacy, by David Milne

A new intellectual history of U.S. foreign policy from the late nineteenth century to the present

Worldmaking is a compelling new take on the history of American diplomacy. Rather than retelling the story of realism versus idealism, David Milne suggests that U.S. foreign policy has also been crucially divided between those who view statecraft as an art and those who believe it can aspire to the certainty of science.

Worldmaking follows a cast of characters who built on one another’s ideas to create the policies we have today. Woodrow Wilson’s Universalism and moralism led Sigmund Freud to diagnose him with a messiah complex. Walter Lippmann was a syndicated columnist who commanded the attention of leaders as diverse as Theodore Roosevelt, Lyndon Johnson, and Charles de Gaulle. Paul Wolfowitz was the intellectual architect of the 2003 invasion of Iraq―and an admirer of Wilson’s attempt to “make the world safe for democracy.” Each was engaged in a process of worldmaking, formulating strategies that sought to deploy the nation’s vast military and economic power―or sought to retrench and focus on domestic issues―to shape a world in which the United States would be best positioned to thrive.

Tracing American statecraft from the age of steam engines to the age of drones, Milne reveals patterns of worldmaking that have remained impervious to the passage of time. The result is a panoramic history of U.S. foreign policy driven by ideas and by the lives and times of their authors.

Review

“David Milne tells the story of the hundred or so years when a sequence of public intellectuals shaped the discourse and practice of U.S. foreign affairs with confidence and élan―and guided America to its place as the world’s No. 1 power . . . That Mr. Milne succeeds, and brilliantly, is due in no small part to the vivacity and jargon-free clarity of his prose. But he also has a clever, thoughtful thesis that, while developed with great brio, he is careful not to overstate.” ―Richard Aldous, The Wall Street Journal

“[Milne] offers up detailed and often surprisingly moving portraits of nine prominent American foreign policy thinkers, from Alfred Thayer Mahan and George Kennan to Henry Kissinger and, finally, Barack Obama. Each portrait is rich in detail, contextualizing its subject’s understanding of America’s role in the world and offering a glimpse into the debates and dilemmas that have troubled policymakers for a century or more.“ ―Rosa Brooks, The Washington Post

“An account of American foreign policy at once dense with information yet written with such elegant élan that the theory and practice of statecraft becomes compellingly readable. Milne brings to life nine leading figures in the development of American thinking about the nation’s role in the world, weaving formative moments in their biographies with the policies they advocated.” ―David Luhrssen, Shepherd Express

“Remarkable . . . David Milne scrutinizes the work of nine Americans who, beginning in the late 19th century, shaped their country’s relationship with the rest of the world . . . His portraits are detailed, clearly the product of enormous amounts of research, and the result is a mini-encyclopedia about the philosophical foundations of America’s foreign policy . . . A valuable addition to the literature of diplomacy.” ―Philip Seib, Dallas Morning News

“[Worldmaking?‘s] careful historical accounts are rich in insight and provide extraordinary contextual breadth." ―Cameron Munter, Foreign Affairs

“Insightful.” ―Michael Ignatieff, The New York Review of Books

“The overall arc of [Worldmaking] is fascinating, showing how the play of ideas and politics has worked out over more than a century, with some of the most critical episodes in modern history as main episodes in the plot . . . A well-documented, full-scale overview of some key makers of modern history.” ― Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“A panoramic intellectual history of U.S. foreign policy from the nation's emergence as a major maritime power in the late nineteenth century to the present . . . Thanks to the detail and care Milne takes in describing his subjects' backgrounds, the more intriguing narrative that emerges is about the intimate yet fraught relationship between the academy and the levers of power. This is a timely, fascinating work.” ―Brendan Driscoll, Booklist

“This is an outstanding book. As an intellectual history of the drivers in U.S. foreign policy, it is the best one available. But it is also a superb overview of the lives of some of the key creators of America's position in the world.” ―Odd Arne Westad, S.T. Lee Professor of U.S.-Asia Relations, Harvard University

“A marvelous achievement. David Milne gives us not merely a richly textured and striking collective portrait of some of the most important figures in modern American diplomacy and statecraft; he also explains, as few others have, how the United States rose to its unrivaled position on the world stage--and what it means for international affairs today. An altogether splendid book.” ―Fredrik Logevall, Laurence D. Belfer Professor of International Affairs, Harvard University

“Is U.S. foreign policy a science or an art? In this beautifully written, uncommonly wise history, David Milne shows that it can be both. Ideas, as much as material forces or strategic necessity, shape America's approach to the world. Milne demonstrates beyond any doubt the importance of the intellectuals who put these ideas into action--for better or worse. A brilliant and important book.” ―Andrew Preston, author of Sword of the Spirit, Shield of Faith: Religion in American War and Diplomacy

“Well-documented, insightful, and easy to understand, this analysis is a must-read for anyone interested in this topic.” ―Daniel Blewett, Library Journal (starred review)

One of the finest books on foreign policy I have ever read.
By David Becker
Mine's book uses deep analysis of the thinking of representative American foreign policymakers and public from the 1890s (Alfred Thayer Mahan) to the present (Barack Obama) to unravel the tangled threads of ideas and concepts that animated US responses to international crises from the war with Spain to the advent of ISIS. He points how their successes and failures have created analogies to later situations that policymakers used to help frame their recommendations--sometimes successfully, often not so much. From all this Milne concludes that Obama's "pragmatic realism" and it's attendant rejection of grand strategy is the best approach for securing American national interests and moral values in today's uncertain world, not least because it lacks the power and capacity to create a new world order in its own image.

Neocons and believers in American exceptionalism will dislike this book intensely. But they will not find it easy, if they remain true to the historical record rather than twist it to ideological purposes, to refute its arguments. An outstanding book and a must-read for students and practitioners of foreign policymaking.

The good, the bad, and the ugly of U.S. foreign policy
By Eric C. Petersen
Studiously researched, well written, and most informative covering the "big thinkers" on U.S. foreign policy for the last century-plus. A common theme is how much Washington has been invested in the past, obscuring a reasoned view of the future. One example might be the start of the Bush II administration when the Defense Policy Guideline was being drawn up: After the downfall of the USSR in 1991, the Clinton era saw restrained military budgets - the peace dividend, and, in Clinton's last year, a budget surplus. With the insertion of the Vulcans and neocons at the start of the Bush administration, a new threat matrix had to be invented to justify goosing up the military budget. Sundry were cooked up - missile defense against a renaissant Russia, the WMD threat from Saddam, etc. In an April 2001 meeting, Richard Clarke, the national coordinator for security infrastructure protection and national security, greatly irritated Wolfowitz for suggesting al-Qaida be put a the top of the threat list: In 1993 Ramzi Yousef had detonated a truck bomb in the basement of the World Trade Center hoping to topple one tower into the other, killing a quarter of a million. Subsequent embassy attacks in Africa and then the USS Cole clearly showed the terrorist group had the USA in its sights. To quote from the book: "Clarke replied that al-Qaeda plans major acts of terrorism against the U.S.," Clarke warned. "It plans to overthrow Islamic governments and set up a radical multinational Caliphate, and then go to war with non-Muslim states...They have published all of this and sometimes, as with Hitler in Mein Kampf, you have to believe that these people will actually do what they say they will do." Wolfowitz replied testily, "I resent any comparison between the Holocaust and this little terrorist in Afghanistan." Then again, LBJ didn't see any problems in defeating North Vietnam, a "pissant little country."

Understand the Threads of American Foreign Policy
By Jon Mertz
David Milne has written a book for the ages, one which will be studied to understand the linkages in foreign policy and the impact individuals have through different presidents. Worldmaking will become a key part of political science college courses, I believe. The foreign policy threads that weave through time are essential to understand.

There are a number of elements that I really like about Worldmaking. The first is how non-elected individuals have a sustaining influence on our foreign policy. Whether adversarial or complimentary in thought, certain philosophies continue to build or recapture attention and pursuit. Elected leaders make the decisions, but there is an underlying foundation of individuals who have influenced policies and actions.

The second is the tug between realists, idealists, and pragmatists The latter may still be developing while leveraging the other two. The stories of thought through our history show the art and science of foreign policy. A fascinating look at the challenges and interwoven nature of how to lead through world power shifts and challenges.

If you seek a solid understanding of American foreign policy, read this book. A greater awareness of the political thought behind decisions pursued will be realized. Like I said, I see this book being used in college classrooms, and it should be. More than this, anyone looking to understand foreign policy debates and considerations should spend the time to read this well-written book. It is time to raise our national awareness on foreign policy, a responsibility of being an educated citizen.

Invertebrates: Webster's Timeline History, 1575 - 2006, by Icon Group International

Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Invertebrates," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Invertebrates in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Invertebrates when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Invertebrates, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain.

Contact, Continuity, and Collapse: The Norse Colonization of the North Atlantic (Studies in the Early Middle Ages), by James Barrett

This collection of ten papers investigates the Norse colonization of the North Atlantic region, starting with Viking expansion in Arctic Norway and ending with a discussion of the longterm implications of medieval Scandinavian exploration of the New World. Each chapter provides a short regional synthesis of the archaeological evidence and, where appropriate, addresses three interrelated themes: the relationship between native and newcomer; the creation of local identities in the settlement period; the relationship between archaeology, history and the construction of modern national identities. In sequence, the chapters focus on North Norway, the Faeroes, Scotland, Ireland, Iceland, Greenland, the Inuits of Smith Sound, L'Anse aux Meadows and Vinland, together with introductory and concluding chapters.

Good essays on Vinland, Greenland
By Smallchief
As with most collections of scholarly essays some of the contributions to this book are outstanding and others are rather boring. The article about the only-known Norse settlement in North America, L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, is clear, concise, well illustrated (especially a good map) and tells you about all you need to know about the site and its history. The article about the failure of the Greenland colony is also very good, and the epilog introduces the speculation that the Norse colonies may have been impacted by the expanding Atlantic empires of the British, Spanish and others.

I was less interested in the articles about the Norse interactions with the Saami (we used to call them Lapps, but I guess that term is now politically incorrect), the settlement of the Faroe islands, and the Norse in Iceland, Ireland, and Scotland. Some of these articles are are bit heavy on archaelogy for my taste, but the quality of the scholarship seems impeccable. The general tenor of the book is conservative with authors sticking to what can be proven or logically surmised based on the evidence.
This is a worthwhile book of 250 pages with good maps and illustrations and bibliographies for each of the nine essays and the introduction. It's well worth your time to read the essays which interest you.

Amazon.com Review
Systems integrators need ways to handle messages as they flow among elements of a system. Smooth message handling is vital to enterprise application integration. IBM's MQSeries product has emerged as the dominant force in mainframe message queuing. Microsoft Message Queue Server (MSMQ) line is gaining strength on Windows computers. Advanced Messaging Applications with MSMQ and MQSeries shows how to put the two to use.

Rhys Lewis's consultant nature shows through in this book. His organization strategy is to present problems that need to be solved and then proceed to solve them in various ways. It's a practical approach, and Lewis is careful to choose problems that systems integrators are likely to encounter on the job. He first creates a straight client/server system that uses message queuing directory lookups and then moves on to adorn the basic system with additional features (including asynchronous update capability and automatic server starting). Lewis presents the problems clearly and lists C programs that solve them. He then comments on the software to clarify what's going on. He is careful to solve problems with both messaging packages (MSMQ and MQSeries) and does a good job of separating the architecture of his solutions from their implementation. A handy reference to the MSMQ and MQSeries APIs wraps up this volume. --David Wall

Topics covered: The MSMQ and IBM MQSeries lines of message-queuing software for applications integrators in regard to typical enterprise application integration requirements. Using C code, message-based database queries, asynchronous database updates, transactions and threading, and error handling are explained.

Good, overall coverage
By R. Coleman
This book is relative if you are using MSMQ or MQSeries. There is also a chapter regarding using both of these messaging products together. This book will get you 'up and running'. The concepts of messaging are nicely explained
As the book was published in Dec 1999 I would have expected more coverage of MSMQ 2.0 and code samples in Java or C++. The author uses C for the examples! This actually makes the code samples more complex - such as the use of static local variables rather than private members.

Should be titled: Beginning Messaging Applications with ....
By Roland Barcia
This book is a nice introduction to MQ-Series, however, is no way advanced. It just touches the basic concepts but goes either very little or nothing into channels, clusters, distribution lists, threading, transactions, and so-forth. I skipped the chapters on MSMQ, so i can't say much about that section.

During World War I 370,000 African Americans labored, fought, and died to make the world safe for a democracy that refused them equal citizenship at home. The irony was made more bitter as black troops struggled with the racist policies of the American military itself. The overwhelming majority were assigned to labor companies; those selected for combat were under-trained, poorly equipped, ad commanded by white officers who insisted on black inferiority. Still, African Americans performed admirably under fire: the 369th Infantry regiment was in continuous combat loner than any other American unit, and was the first Allied regiment to cross the Rhine in the offensive against Germany. The Unknown Soldiers, the only full-scale examination of the subject, chronicles the rigid segregation; the limited opportunities for advancement; the inadequate training, food, medical attention, housing, and clothing; the verbal harassment and physical abuse, including lynchings; the ingratitude, unemployment, and unprecedented racial violence that greeted their return. The Unknown Soldiers is an unforgettable, searing study of those wartime experiences that forced African Americans to realize that equality and justice could never be earned in Jim Crow America, but only wrested from its strangling grip.

When you think you know everything there is to know about American history in general, and World War I in particular, somebody like Arthur Barbeau and company comes along and educates you as to how ignorant you were. This book is a wonder and, with "The Unwept: Black American Soldiers And The Spanish-American War" by Edward van Zile Scott, provides a remarkable history of Afro-American soldiers in two wars over a period of twenty years.
Barbeau's indignation shines through when he asks the same questions a reader must ask about the injustices Black soldiers were subjected to in America as they prepared to depart for Europe, the indignities they suffered while attempting to fight a war to save democracy once in Europe while denied it in their homeland, and the suffering they experienced in Europe and upon their return to the United States after the war. But Barbeau's indignation is muted, reasonable, logical, and unobtrusive considering the horrors he describes Black troops being subjected to and the slanders against the bravery they displayed in spite of poor equipment, if any;poor training, if any;poor, non-supportive, and/or racist commanders;inadequate support; the institutionalized racism of the military that constantly demeaned them by declaring their inferiority in order to affirm white superiority;and the constant effort to develop Black soldiers as a slave-labor force instead of one prepared for combat. The descriptions of the outrages committed against these soldiers as they prepared to return to America and then after they did arrive "home" speak volumes about the all-important need to support the concept of white supremacy and enforce that of black inferiority in spite of the well-researched and documented facts Barbeu presents as to the fallacy of each.
Barbeau clearly establishes that there was more than one war being waged in Europe regarding the service of Black troops. But his documentation of the service and efforts of those troops in spite of their treatment by their own military can only cause one to marvel at the heights to which racial and national pride urged these brave men forward. The history of Black troops in WWI is known at last thanks to Mr. Barbeau's important contribution to an accurate history of warfare and the people who fight it.
Barbeau,et al, suggest that the "New Negro" of the post-World War I period was a direct outcome of the increased pride and dignity Black soldiers found during their service in Europe and which the French military saluted and honored many times with military awards, even though the US military attempted to discourage that recognition in various ways, including the distribution of a secret communication that attempted to justify discrimination against Afro-Americans by the American military and promote it in the French military and general society.
Read this book. Add it to your library. You'll refer to it many times in the future.

A classic in American Military History
By Amy Knapp
First published in the mid 1970's, this has been the only book on the subject for many years. An excellent treatment of the racial climate in America on the eve of the war, and the subsequent actions taken by the Army with America's entry in 1917. It provides a stark picture of the treatment given to African-Americans as they attempted to serve. It provides the reader with brief histories of the 92nd and 93rd Divisions, the two "Colored" divisions in the AEF and also gives a summation of the treatment given the returning troops. It has good footnotes and sources, and this edition has the added bonus of a forward by Bernard C. Nalty. If any criticism can be leveled at this book it would probably be that new scholarship in this field has uncovered more facts and new interpratations. Anyone interested in the American experience in World War one should read this book. It is written so that it is accessable to the scholar and history buff alike.
