A Great Ending to a Great Saga

This is the first free Kindle book (out of dozens) to which I have purchased the sequels. I couldn't stop reading them. The Promises to Keep series is extremely well-written. The historical content is well-researched, the characters are very well-developed and even though the books are long and detailed, I found every detail interesting.

The main downside, as others have mentioned, is that there is no closure until the end of the third book.

The third book in the series, Settling the Account, was my favorite. Amy has found contentment, become the most selfless, patient person on earth, and, at the end, finds peace and happiness. The last scene of her and Charlie was my favorite scene in the entire series.

Wonderful Series

I have now read all 4 in the "Promises to Keep" series and I have to say they are some of the best books I have ever read.

The setting is New Zealand in the late 1800s and the history is fascinating. Life was brutal for everyone, but especially for women. The story begins with Amy, a young farm girl in the bush country of New Zealand. She is like young girls every where, full of dreams and hopes for her future. However, she makes a terrible mistake at age 15 and trust someone who was not trustworthy and she pays the price.

This story covers the brutality of the everyday life for women and children of that era but it also shows how the will to survive overcomes. It shows the horrors that many women of that era experienced but also shows the tenderness that came in unexpected places.

The history of that time is extraordinary and is presented in a way that you don't even realize how much historical data is actually being given. All the books are wonderfully written and once you become accustomed to the British spellings of words and the New Zealand slang....you will wish for the books and series to continue on and on.

Get the first book and I can almost guarantee that you will have to get the rest of the series.

This book kept me engrossed in the stories of the characters. Amy is a believable character set back in the late 1800s early 1900s. I found myself wrapped up in her story and that of her family. Shayne Parkinson tells the story in an engaging way that makes you feel as if you are observing the trials and celebrations firsthand.

Fantastic Overview and Useful to All

The book by Dale, Von Schantz and Platt, From Genes to Genomes, is almost perfect. It is a 350 or so page exceptionally well written book describing all the introductory materials one would need to become current with genomes and genomics efforts. As with many of the other books I had around I first looked at this and at a glance set it aside. Then came the moment when I wanted to re-understand something and I opened this book up and I was hooked. It in a clean and clear manner takes the reader from basic DNA principles and through all of the key techniques used in genomic studies today. It avoids getting to complex into any one area and it reads in a straightforward and consistent manner. It is a superb asset for “catching up” and I suspect for first learning the materials.

Chapter 1 is the basic introduction to genes and genomes. It is DNA 101 but it contains little tidbits of essential materials that are all well integrated. One thus starts with a clear understanding where the authors are taking the reader.

Chapter 2 is the material on basic gene cloning. It uses the plasmid approach with bacteriophage and does so without burdening the reader with too much overhead and history. This Chapter discusses technique and technology and the reader is given a logical approach to the basics of cloning. Restriction enzymes are introduced and the material is adequate to have enough depth to see how they can be applied. There are, of course, a lot of implementation questions that are left hanging but that is typical of this study. There is a section on ligation and I would like to have seen this carried over a bit when discussing gene knock-outs. We can understand how the genes ligate but the question is how well does this carry-over the later processes.

Chapter 3 discusses DNA libraries. This is a wonderful summary of the concept. The graphics supplement the text without over powering it. One example of what I call the cook book facts is demonstrated in p 95 when discussing hybridization. Here is the curve showing how as temperature increases the DNA starts to break apart. This is the denaturing of DNA, a concept again used with the PCR analysis. This is less a theoretical or structure issue but one of those cook-book facts that have been added to the tool chest of the Genome builder.

Chapter 4 is the PCR process. Simply it is the separating of DNA, then tagging one end and the other end and going through a temperature sensitive denaturing and rebuilding until what is left is millions of copies of a desired DNA segment. My only complaint here is that the graphic, good, albeit it could be made a bit better with color.

Chapter 5 discusses sequencing and it gives a superb discussion of the Sanger approach. Namely ddNTPs are used with segments and then measured in a gel electrophoresis. I assume that the reader may have had some understanding of the physical details but overall it is clear and exceptionally useful.

The text continues developing other elements used in current day genomics. Chapter 9 is an attempt to provide an overview of microarrays, SNP, and even GWAS and phylogenetics. My problem here is that they are trying to stretch it a bit too far. These are reasonable summaries but to do microarrays justice it may take a bit more detail, and yes color, and the phylogenetics is much too much just a high level summary.

Finally the Glossary is fantastic and worth every page.

The strengths and weakness of the book are simple. On the strength side it covers all the key issues superbly. On the negative side, and this may be perhaps me, I find that almost like Organic Chemistry, in Gene manipulation there still are many cookbook rules that are scattered between the facts and logical constructs. If somehow there could be a clarification of the cook book rule and the well understood logical steps that would be a help.

Overall I would highly recommend this book for almost anyone, from beginner to professional. My focus is clinical and theoretical modelling and analysis, and I have avoided bench work as much as possible. But by reading this book I can see again how much work has been done over the past few decades.

Delivered on time, great product

This book is very readable and I thoroughly enjoyed the chapters I've read thus far for Molecular Genetics class. It does however assume you have a basic understanding of DNA biology so I would recommend brushing up a little on that before flipping through it. Still, it's great for anyone wanting to expand their knowledge in that area.

It made me want to travel so bad, I can't focus at work

I stumbled across this book by accident in my father's bookshelf, and started reading it on a rather uneventful Sunday afternoon. I have always been interested in sailing, but this book really lit a fire under me to go cruising. I've since re-read this book and am still planning my dream cruise to the south pacific. The book talks about the Cornell family (parents and 2 young kids) spending 3 years sailing in the pacific. their story of visiting Pitcairn's Island forced me to reread Mutiny on the Bounty. It is a delightful read, and makes me wish my parents had taken me on a long sailing journey as a child. By the way, Gwenda is married to Jimmy Cornell, who has written a number of cruising books. Pacific Odyssey is a great read, but beware, you may not be able to get rid of the cruising bug. I know I haven't.

Her husband dreamed of sailing off to see the world so when he decided to do it, she went with him. They took their two children ages 7 and 9 (or thereabouts) and spent six years afloat; three of them in the Pacific. Her observations are well-written and provide perspective on what many of us imagine as an idyllic lifestyle. Throughout she presents a positive view while adding bits of reality: making friends while on the go and having to say goodbye; worrying about the safety of their possessions when they leave the boat; the challenges of finding fresh fruit and vegetables.

A people person, she writes about their interactions rather than the technical aspects. Not as lurid as I'd hoped, but more updated than Captain Cook's accounts. She's enough of an anthropologist that one can look up the traditional dances she names on Youtube.

In the end, the difficulties of raising children entering puberty, especially, it seemed, the daughter, led them landward.

The "Do you..?" is not the same as the performed version of 10th Anniversary !!!

If you take a notice, Yiruma's "Do you..?" has two versions: the old original version (2005) and the new 10th Anniversary version (2012). The two versions are quite different.
The "Do you..?" in this book is obviously the old original version, not the version of the album "The Best: Reminiscent 10th Anniversary". That's why I gave this product 2 stars ---it is not the same as described!

The differences of the two versions can be easily tell:

Good collection of Yirumas piano works, but the music appears to have been simplified, which may be good or bad depending on your skill level (bad in my case as a player of Chopin etudes level). Also it doesn't have the new intro for Chacconne.

My daughter really loves playing this music. It is challenging to play but for a level 4 or higher it should be fine. It goes from level 3-6 according to my daughter. We found him on youtube and when we want serenity we play his music. He is an excellent composer and musician.

About the Author
T.L. spent several years in the corporate world working with global “megacorps” before moving on to her most important job, raising her two children. During naptime, she created a world to escape to in SIRENS. She enjoys using science to create fantastical fiction, packing sophisticated, sometimes controversial, themes into stories of adventure, and twisting ordinary legends. Get Lost in Lost World

A great sequel...Lost World kept me engaged throughout. I don't know how Zalecki thinks of this stuff! It's an entirely different world -- well developed and thought out -- you can see and smell Rodinia and you are rooting for the Sirens. I did not see the ending coming! I enjoyed that it offered enough closure but at the same time left me wanting more. Looking forward to the release of the third book.

Lost World

Wow! Just wow! If I thought I enjoyed the first book in this series, I was completely blown away with this one. The futuristic aspects really came to life in this exciting manner that really allowed me to picture the entire story. I loved the mix of biology and fantasy. It was even further developed than in the first novel of the series. Her descriptions blended with the enticing plot in a manner that was breathtaking in its realism and not only sparked my interest, but held it captive. The excitement and the intense undercurrent running throughout were absolutely unforgettable. They kept me hooked and had me on my toes.

I enjoyed getting to know the new characters in the series and absolutely loved getting back in touch with those from the first novel. Seeing the plot evolve through their eyes gave it a very unique feel. For me, it really increased the intensity of the tale. Also, the fact that I loved the characters, wanted to get to know them better and saw them as friends by the end of the novel made it even better for me.

Once again, this fantastic author has taken me on a wild adventure. She sparked my interest with the unique, biology & dystopian based plot and held it with the imaginative writing. I loved each and every moment of it.

I love both of the books in the series

I love both of the books in the series, and I am hopeful there will be a third book!

I'm quite the bookworm but I don't recall ever being this in love with characters before. That being said, I found myself crying a few times in the book. Both happy tears and tears of sorrow.

I love mermaids (or rather, sirens) and I love sci-fi & dystopia novels, but I also love the themes in the story: environmentalism, corporate greed, religion and domination, evolution and Darwinism. And the message, we are all equals.

The story itself is quite enjoyable and the author is a strong writer.
