The inspirational true story portrays the real life of a surfing champion, who fights all odds to chase his lifetime dream. As a Master storyteller, the author describes a young man's quest to surf one of California's most dangerous waves, his friendship and strong bond with his mentor, and the risks taken for the love and passion of surfing. "CHASING MAVERICKS" is heartwarming in relationships, heart-wrenching as we learn the true definition of a close-call in a near-death situation, and powerfully moving as we learn about pushing your limits. The surfing champion rides the huge waves, faces scary consequences, but his spirit for love of surfing never discourages him to quit. His will-power and determination are incredible. This book is as thrilling and as intriguing as the movie, which leaves the viewer mesmerized as we feel as if we are there, while the ocean's stunning waves come to life. Both the book and the movie are interesting, amazing, and addictive! The touching story also includes life's ups-and-downs, and the importance of relationships and mentors in our lives. As a beach-lover from the Northeast, forty-five years of my life, I would indeed watch the movie again, and enjoyed the book very much. A delightful, inspiring page-turner! Highly Recommended!

Finished this book in record time!

I chose to read In The Midnight Hour because I work in the medical field and love novels, and TV shows depicting people like myself in that kind of familiar setting. This is written by a debut author and I was not sure if he would be able to compare to other Medical Thriller authors I enjoy reading like Robin Cook, Peter Clement or Tess Gerritsen. This novel did not disappoint. It grabs you from the first chapter scene and keeps you invested from the beginning until the end. It is a hard to put down page turner. I found the medical descriptions realistic and the terminology accurate yet not overbearing. I especially enjoyed the budding love story between the two protagonists, and really liked their well written and believable characters. They get thrown into life or death predicaments at times and you find you are holding your breath. The killer who stalks the halls of a prestigious medical center is like a modern day jack the ripper. Although he has a sympathetic quality to him and you can almost forgive him for wanting to seek revenge against certain people who have caused the ruination of his life, his marriage and his medical carrier. I was drawn in to this well written character like a Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs. Many of the murder scenes and expository dreamlike flashbacks are seen through his own eyes and from his point of view, which is unnerving at first, but at the same time enjoyable. The plot reminded me of the phantom of the opera as the killer is able to move about undetected in a large hospital, doing his heinous acts yet able to blend in and be invisible in the dark corners, because he is mostly all alone due to the lateness of the hour, and he has a familiarity of the labyrinthine nature of of his surroundings. I recommend this novel for anyone who is seeking a griping new medical thriller with interesting characters and intriguing plot twists.

Decent medical thriller debut

A decent medical thriller for a debut. At times it has a fast paced tension, horror-feel to it. The remorselessness of the killer in the beginning is haunting. There was a bit of not being in the villain's direct POV though with words like "he noticed" and "he realized". However, this mad man is not mad - but quite intelligent -and we fall for his madness a bit - which makes it even more chilling.

Ridgway's cast of characters are good mix which notches up the interesting aspect of the tale. I would have preferred more dialogue to increase the tension vs. the long narrative in the book. Also at times the story was slowed down by too much medical detail and the backstory of each character which all could have been weaved in with a deft hand in shorter bits throughout the book. But you do feel as if this author really knows his medical stuff and why the story is so entrenched with it making it quite believable - and I enjoyed the graphic detail. Overall a decent read.

I had recently read a couple of novels that were really hard work to finish. In direct contrast 'In The Midnight Hour,' is fast paced, well written and enthralling. The action starts in the first chapter, slows a little in the middle when the hero and heroine are forming a relationship and finishes with a real oomph. One of the best suspense medical thrillers that I have read, and finished it in one session...couldn't put it down.

Über den Autor: 1777 in Frankfurt an der Oder als Offizierssohn geboren, tritt Bernd Wilhelm Heinrich von Kleist 1792 selbst in den Militärdienst und nimmt am Rheinfeldzug gegen die französische Republik teil. Zum Leutnant befördert, quittiert er 1799 den Militärdienst und studiert Rechtswissenschaften in Frankfurt an der Oder. Die Lektüre von Kants Schriften lässt sein rationalistisches Weltbild zerbrechen und löst eine Lebenskrise aus. Nach zahlreichen Reisen lebt er längere Zeit in Paris und in der Schweiz, wo u.a. sein populärstes Stück Der zerbrochene Krug entsteht. Nach Stationen in Leipzig und Dresden und Weimar tritt er in Berlin in den preußischen Staatsdienst ein. Mit dem militärischen Zusammenbruch Preußens gerät Kleist 1806 in mehrmonatige französische Gefangenschaft. 1808 beginnt er mit der Herausgabe der Monatsschrift Phöbus. Ein Journal für die Kunst. Die Uraufführung des zerbrochenen Kruges in einer Bearbeitung von Goethe am Hoftheater in Weimar wird zu einem Misserfolg. Kleist begeistert sich für die patriotischen Schriften von Ernst Moritz Arndt, scheitert mit dem Plan, unter dem Namen Germania eine politische Wochenzeitschrift mit nationaler Tendenz in Österreich herauszugeben und wird 1810 Herausgeber der Tageszeitung Berliner Abendblätter, die im März 1811 eingestellt wird. Nach Jahren von wiederkehrender Krankheit und Misserfolgen, in denen er mehrfach Selbstmordabsichten äußert, nimmt sich Heinrich von Kleist am 21.11.1811 gemeinsam mit seiner Freundin Henriette Vogel, die er ein paar Tage zuvor kennengelernt hatte, am Kleinen Wannsee bei Berlin das Leben.

About the Author
Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) kam nach dem frühen Tod des Vaters 1788 in das Haus des Predigers S. Cartel und besuchte das französische Gymnasium. 1792 trat er in das Potsdamer Garderegiment ein. Kleist nahm am Rheinfeldzug (1796) teil, wurde Leutnant (1797) und schied 1799 freiwillig aus dem Dienst aus. Dann studierte er Philosophie, Physik, Mathematik und Staatswissenschaft in Frankfurt/O. (1799/1800). Zwischen 1802 und 1803 lebte er in Weimar bei Wieland , wo er auch Goethe und Schiller kennenlernte. 1804 trat er in den preußischen Staatsdienst ein. Er wurde 1807 in Berlin als vermeintlicher Spion festgenommen. 1807-1809 war er in Dresden, wo er mit Tieck verkehrte und mit A. Müller den "Phöbus" herausgab. 1810 gab er mit A. Müller die "Berliner Abendblätter" heraus, die schon kurz darauf wegen Zensurschwierigkeiten eingestellt werden mußten. Ohne literarischen Erfolg, an menschlichen Bindungen zweifelnd und über die politische Lage verzweifelt, nahm er sich gemeinsam mit der unheilbar kranken Henriette Vogel am Wannsee das Leben. Kleist starb am 21.11.1811.

Very informative well written guide for health.

I got this book because I love plants, I love rare plants and and I believe in herbs and plants for health. But never even heard the work Ashitaba, I had to pronounce i a few times before I got it.
I loved this book I loved the stories and how it helps and I am sure I will refer to it often. It was easy to read and easy to get info from it. In fact I picked it up at every chance I could.
I could not find cuttings or plants anywhere on internet for it so I ordered seeds for it. Scares me though as it seems like it will be hard and long to grow from seed. But I am up for the effort if it will help me.
While reading the book my interest was peaked so I looked up all the information I could find on this plant. There is not near as much info as what is in this little gem of a book.
If you wonder if you should buy it, yes it is worth it.
Am I glad I got it, yes I am.

This is one of the only publications on Ashitaba, Genus: Angelica - Species: A. keiskei out there. It seems to cover just about everything except forms of it, some information is missing. As a plant it comes in different forms, leaf, stem, root and extracts there of.
